'Why don't you ever look me in the eyes?'
I spun around, surprised by the sudden question, shattering what had been a contented silence.
'I... Um...Well...' I stuttered.
They turned to look at me, their dark eyebrows furrowed deeply in seeming disappointment at my inadequate response.
'Well, if you really need to know...'
I gently laid my hand on their chin and turned their head slowly to face me, my thumb absently caressing their blushing cheek. My eyes, wide and wild, were sucked deep into their features. Dark eyelashes lined their eyes, much like a wall against a tsunami; a tsunami of emotions and feelings, some of which I had never experienced before I met them. A small obstacle, fracturing by the second, to shield me from the butterflies squirming in the pit of my stomach. But I went further. Much further. Deep past the glinting irises of indigos and sapphires. I moved my mouth, my jaw shuddering open.
'Your eyes... They just engulf me whole, suffocating me like a roaring, dancing flame, starved from oxygen. I can't breath as I look into the charcoal darkness, like the ink on the crisp paper that lines the area next to you constantly, the spirals and swirls on the lines matching my tumbling thoughts and flurries of heartbeats. The thing is, I drown every time I look at you. And I love it. But it scares me. I worry that I will never be able to come up for air, that I will forever be sinking into the depths of your pupils, unable to surface, finding it impossible to free my thoughts from the chains and shackles that you create. And you see, that is why I can never look you in the eyes.'
