Adeline fiddled with the seam of her dress deep in thought. She was sitting alone at her favorite place, the top of the biggest rock in the woods.
She sometimes had to get away from her house just to get a break from all the fighting. Her parents always fought but it seemed more severe now sense her thirteenth birthday is only a week away.
They fought about weird things, sometimes using strange words like they were talking about something secretive. She'd only asked once what they were fighting about, but she got herself a three months grounding and she just decided to let the curiosity go after that.
Now her curiosity was worse than ever. She hopped off her rock, pacing. Maybe there wondering what to get me for my birthday? She thought, but she knew better than to think that. She hasn't seen her parents fight this way before.
"Adeline!" her brother yelled from the edge of the woods. "Where are you, mom and dad are worried!" Huh, took them a while didn't it she couldn't help but roll her eyes.
"I'm here, Adam" she called back. Her brother walked towards the rock and climbed on top to sit with her.
His bright blue electric eyes pierced her with a look of concern. "Hey Addie don't worry everything's fine mom and dad are going to be okay," he said patting her arm.
"Do you know what there fighting about?" She asked, knowing she wouldn't get the truth.
Adam looked at her and shut his eyes opening them slowly, which is how she knew he was about to lie. "No, but come on before they get worried about us." He gave her another look. She didn't bother to ask again he would never give her the answer. He was starting to get strange to, always coming out of corners and dark spaces she had the feeling he was watching her so she wouldn't get into trouble or do something. When they were little he would always be with her and play with her, but now it was like he was scared to have more than a five minute conversation with her. He grabbed her hand and helped her off the rock towards the stone, grim looking mansion.
They walked up the stone steps towards the yells of there fighting parents. "Hey I think I'm going to get somethings to eat real quick you go ahead" she told Adam. He walked up the steps towards his room.
But instead of going to the kitchen Adeline walked into the hall towards her parents room where they were fighting. She couldn't hear very well so all she got were muffled voices. "No John, don't give it to her she doesn't know what she is, she's safe this way!"
Adeline pressed her ear to the door wondering if she'd heard wrong. She heard her fathers faint voice of concern "Terry I have to! do you want her to find out herself or would you rather her be prepared for what she's going to face?"
What? Her thoughts were building up in her head. Were they talking about her? What would she have to face? Don't give what to her? She felt her curiosity turn into fear eating away at her from the inside.
Hey guys!!! So it's kinda boring right now but just wait for the next chapter. I'm sorry if I have any grammar/spelling errors just comment what they are and I'll fix them.
What do you think Adeline's parents are fighting about? What about Adeline's mysterious brother?
This will probably be the shortest chapter in the story btw.
