Good Riddance

The radio was on the brink. It kept spewing out random static in the middle of songs, and soon I had to turn the damned thing off or I was gonna throw it out the window of my car. I was driving along a quiet country road, it was dark, and soon I came to a fork in the road. Fuck. I reached to the back seats to look at the map again, but knew it was useless before I even brushed my fingers against it. I was lost. I just sat there for a while, eyes closed, mind empty.

Then, out of nowhere, I knew which way I was supposed to go.
I put the car in gear, and set off. As soon as I got on the road, I knew it was gonna be a long country lane with no turn offs, and let my mind wander.

I began to think of why I had left; I saw the old photographs before my eyes, all those happy memories, all those good times. The memories also flooded to the front of my mind. I remembered the way he held me, the way his skin felt against mine, and the way his hair smelt. I sighed. It was all over now, and I had to leave. As I was thinking of this, I could feel the tattoo on my arm burning away under the long black sleeve of my shirt. It was nothing big, and it wasn't a new tattoo, but I had gotten it when I was with him. It really meant a lot to me. And now everything had ended with him, it was nothing but a nightmare. It haunted me, and it would never allow me to let go of the past. I had often thought of just trying to cut it off, but before I got that crazy the realistic part of my mind kicked in, and told me it was not possible, it was not an option.

A loud bang brought me back to reality with a bump. Literally. I felt the car jerking around, and I tried to figure out what had happened. I heard twigs and brambles scratching their way up the sides of the car, and where the windows were open, they reached in and tried to grab me, only succeeding in cutting my arms and face slightly. I gasped, tried to brake, but before I knew it I was the other side of the hedges, but still rolling on. The brakes wouldn't work, no matter what I tried, and I knew the handbrake barely worked at the best of times.

It was pitch black and I couldn't see where I was going. Not that it mattered. As soon as I was the other side of the hedges, I felt my stomach try to fly up into the air. I was falling.
The car had driven over the edge of a cliff, and was plummeting towards the ground.

I accepted my fate, but that didn't stop me screaming. Those memories and photographs flooded my vision again, or was that just the tears in my eyes? As I fell, I knew that I did not regret anything that had happened, I was glad I had memories like these.

I'd had the time of my life.
