The grandfather clock struck 2 o'clock. Sweat trickled down his face. He could feel the creature's eyes on him. What it looked like, he didn't want to find out. He took a few slow steps forward away from it. It moved. Zane froze. He slowly turned around. In a dark corner of the old sitting room, something huge was moving. Well, it was huge for a second. It must have been a shadow because a girl stepped forward into the filtered moonlight. By far the prettiest girl he had ever seen. She was dressed in a long white night gown, and her bare feet were like icing on a dark, wooden cake. Her hair fell in golden tresses down her back, but it was the eyes that captivated Zane the most. Large and deep, her brown eyes might as well have been black. They had a way of making him fell like everything was okay, but something in the back of his mind told him otherwise. He shook his head.
"Who are you?" She answered him.
"I'm lost."
"What?"
She looked at least sixteen, but her voice took him by surprise. It was very soft and almost too sweet to be real.
"I'm lost," she said crossing the room. Zane tried to take a step back but felt compelled to stay where he was. She took his hand. A spike of freezing cold pain shot through his body. He saw the sitting room around him except it was bathed in light. A family was seated around a fire. He blinked and for a fleeting moment, he saw skeletons seated in the armchairs, grinning up at him eerily. The image flashed and the normal people were back, but, blood was seeping in from the crack under the door, and from the ceiling. The room filled with blood. The now drowned family was floating towards him, arms outstretched to grab him.
Zane jerked his hand away and bumped into something. It was an armchair. He didn't want to look down, but he had no choice. In the chair was a skeleton. He jumped up and ran for the door. It was locked. From the outside. He backed away.
"What were they hiding in here?" he asked himself. He turned around slowly and his eyes traveled from the floor to where the girl was standing, except something was happening. Her arms grew so long they touched the floor. Her fingers spread apart and each one, about a foot long, wriggled around like snakes at their own will. Twisting and curling all over the floor. At the same time her back became nothing but skin and bone and arched toward the ceiling. Her neck stretched out and she lowered her head to sniff the floor. Again her eyes were what startled him the most. Her pupils spread out until they covered her entirety of both eyes. The eyes themselves were widening until she had gaping black holes on her face the size of tennis balls. She opened her mouth impossibly wide and her teeth sharpened into hundreds of razor sharp, needle thin teeth, dripping with black poison. Her forked tongue flicked in and out of her mouth.
She rushed at him, only inches away from flattening him against the wall, when he dodge out of the way. She had been mostly quiet until now. She shrieked a loud piercing shriek. So high pitched if Zane had been wearing glasses, the would be shattered. He'd heard stories of hideous creatures like her being able to completely flatten it's victims until they were nothing more than a smeared mess.
He picked up a candlestick to throw, but she reached out an arm and knocked it away. He took refuge behind chair and shut his eyes. If he was gonna die, he didn't want to see how she did it. Suddenly everything was quiet and he looked out from behind the chair.
The door was open and a light was on in the hall. He saw his chance and ran for the door as fast as his legs would carry him. Seconds before he reached it, it slammed shut. Zane skidded to a stop but was pushed up against the door. The creature was trying to flatten him. Its force became stronger and he couldn't see anymore. Black spots appeared in front of his eyes. He couldn't breath in because whenever her exhaled, she crushed him even harder. This was it he was going to die.
The creature gave one last heave and he woke up. He shot up into a sitting position breathing heavily and sweat beaded his face. He lay back down and glanced at the clock. It read 2 o'clock. Zane thought it seemed familiar but rolled over and fell back asleep.
What he didn't know was that in the far corner of his room, a girl was watching him.
A girl with long, blond hair and dark brown eyes. So dark they were almost black.
A girl who whispered ever so softly,
"I'm lost."
