The ground is cold, the air is cold, I am cold. It's mid-January in the cold streets of Chicago and it's freezing.
I walk past the window of a small shop and stop. I stare at my reflection and see my disgusting hair and ripped shirt. I sigh, turn on my heels, and continue walking.
As I walk I can feel people staring at me, their eyes burning into my skin. I pick up the pace and look at the ground hoping to get away from them, when I suddenly bump into something and fall into the snow.
"Ow." I mumble rubbing my head.
"Sorry, are you ok?" I look up and see a man with his arm reaching out to help me up.
"Ya I'm fine I just wasn't looking." I tell him. "How about you are you ok?"
He laughs but I don't understand why. "What's so funny?" I ask
"Well, you fell in a pile of snow and asked if I'm ok. I'm fine, though, thank you." There's a slight pause before he says, "You look cold and I probably just made it ten times worse, so do you maybe want to go get coffee or something?"
"Me?" I ask. He looks at me with a confused expression. "I mean I've never had someone ask if I wanted something before. Nobody seems to care about homeless girls so I'm sorry that I seem so confused." I explain "But yes, I would love something warm right now" I say grabbing his hand. He pulls me up and we begin walking to the nearest coffee shop.
When we get there he buys me a hot cup of coffee and a muffin.
"Mmm i haven't had one of these in awhile." I say as I take another bite of my muffin.
He laughs and asks, "So, how'd you end up like this you know, homeless?" I take a couple more bites before i answer.
"Well, it all started when i was ten. My mother died of lung cancer and life went downhill from there. My brother got into a life of drugs and my father became..." I pause and take a deep breath. "He became abusive and i just had enough of it, so i left and now I'm here. And I still have no one who cares about me."
"Wow I'm sorry for asking. Oh by the way my name's Will."
"I'm Christina nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too." He pauses before saying "You said no one cares, why do you think that?"
"Because, it's the truth. No one has and no one ever will want to help me."
"That's not entirely true. I'll help you get a job and give you someplace to stay if you want. I know we just met but I'm willing to help you as long as you don't end up like this again." He says motioning to my outfit when he says this.
"You really want to help someone like me? Even after you learned about my family?"
"Ya why wouldn't I?"
"Well, you aren't exactly the first person to want to help. The others all left when they found out, so I lost all hope in finding help."
"Well, you just did. Come on let's go find some job openings." I sit there for a minute trying to process what's happening. This guy, Will, wants to help me, a nobody, get my life together. This has never happened to me, ever.
What if he's tricking me?
What if he's a famous pranker online?
What if he hurts me?
These thoughts spin through my head as I sit there, and as Will stands there waiting.
I need to calm down and follow this guy so I can get my life straight.
I take a deep breath and stand up. We step out into the busy street and begin walking.___TIME LAPSE 3 HOURS LATER__
My hair sticks to my neck as I walk down the hallway of Will's apartment. I step into the kitchen and sit on a stool by the island.
"Wow, that was a long shower." Will said as he chopped up vegetables and put them in a pot.
"Really?" I look over at the clock and my mouth drops when I see I was in the shower for 2 and a half hours. "Oh my god I was in there for over 2 hours!" I sit there in shock staring at the clock.
Will chuckles and says, "Stop freaking out it's fine."
"Fine?! I probably used up all of your hot water! Why aren't you mad at me?"
"Because you did nothing wrong." he stated simply as he sat down next to me while the food cooked. He grabs some newspapers on the counter and flips through them. Everytime he found one with a job ad he handed it to me. I put the interesting ones in a pile and the bad ones in the trash. While looking at them I found one that caught my eye.
