“You’ll never be as good as her.”
“You’re just a cheap knock off.”
“Stop trying.”
“You’re a failure. A disgrace.”
What did I do wrong? She asked herself, biting down on her lower lip to keep the tears threating to escape locked up. Her perfectly filed and yellow painted nails grabbed the hem of her gray shirt as she tried her best to keep them steady. Her mouth was shut, for she knew that if she even opened it to breathe, she wouldn’t be able to restrain her emotions. She knew she’d break. I only treated them with kindness…. With respect. I complimented them, I tried to make friends…
Lost in a trail of thoughts, her golden eyes traveled to the floor. The honey-colored hair tucked neatly behind her ears fell before her eyes. She felt small. Breakable. Different. She even felt rage boiling through her veins and burning her from the inside out. Most of all, she was jealous. She was jealous that they were loved by everyone. That they were accepted and treated with nothing but respect.
“Don’t you see that you’re not wanted here anymore?”
“Why don’t you just leave? Just disappear.”
“I…” She made the mistake of opening her mouth, causing her to choke on upcoming tears. Every time she swallowed, she could feel the lump in her throat swelling up. She could feel her pulse beating to the point where it could burst.
The girl turned the other direction, her trembling hand closing around the door knob as she swung the entrance open, shuffling out of the room. She just needed to get out of there. She was on the verge of breaking down. Yet, she couldn’t let them see her cry.
“We’re not done talking to you. Get back here.” They demanded, one of them grabbing her wrist and forcefully pulling her back. Before she was dragged back in the room, the girl slapped her hand away in one swift movement. She didn’t want to put up a fight, to try, but somehow she summed up just enough strength to free herself.
“Don’t tell me what to do.” Her words were heavy in her throat, filled with despair, envy, and hatred. “You don’t control me… Not anymore.”
She wanted to go off on how much she hated this. She wanted scream and shout and let her emotions run wild. But she couldn’t. Silence grew over the room and instead she grew scared. She was scared that they would hurt her.
The girl swallowed hard, stalking down the hallway and taking a sharp turn to the left, leaving everyone behind. They didn’t bother to chase after her, which she assumed was a good thing. She didn’t want them to. She didn’t want to be dragged back to that room with oh-so-many faces looking down upon her. She just wanted to stop feeling everything. She wanted to escape them. To escape this nightmare of voices…
Before she knew it, she was sitting on her bed in her room. Her eyes were staring blankly at the door as she swung her feet off of the bed’s side. “I….” She started, but her thought was never said. She wanted to talk to someone, to find someone who knew what she was feeling.
********
A crash sounded off in the distance, like someone threw a stack of glass plates at the wall with full force. The girl immediately stood up, her mind not even interpreting what was happening as she dashed out of her room.
