“Next is a surprise number by his talented daughter and her boyfriend” announced the MC for the night. It’s my parent’s silver wedding anniversary. And my boyfriend and I are getting really nervous because we didn’t know how they will react to our big news.

“Babe, Hurry up! We’re supposed to be on stage now.” He yelled through the door.

“I know! I’m sorry! Hang on, I’m just- Ouch!” I shrieked back as I slipped and fell on the floor. Just a moment later the door banged open. “Are you okay?” My boyfriend of three years asked me. “Yeah… I just… Never mind let’s go.” I said as I pulled him into the hall.

“Miss- Oh there they are!” The MC called.

My boyfriend looked at me and took my hand. I glanced up and he whispered “ready?” I nodded, looked forward and confidently took the first step. “Here we go.” He breathed and squeezed my hand. He was so nervous, it was adorable! Who could blame him? What he’s about to do takes a lot of guts. He took the guitar and walked towards the piano as I went to get the microphone.

“Hey mom ‘n’ dad! Are you enjoying tonight? The next performance is not just going to be any performance. So please listen closely” I said cheerfully. I then took the microphone with me to the piano, while my boyfriend was fixing his mic.

I sat behind the piano, next to him and he let out a shaky breath. He was so cute! Now I’m starting to get really nervous. I looked at him in his eyes and smiled. Just to reassure him that everything will be okay. One last deep breath as I started to sing.

Dad I know it’s your day, but we’ve something to say.

It’s not shocking news, He just wants it this way.

You know he means a lot to me. So please just go easy on him.

I can see how my parents are starting to feel confused, scared and worried at the same time. My boyfriend’s taking one last deep breath as I’m playing the short piano part. Then he starts singing as he puts a small box on the piano for everyone to see. I hear some of our closest friends gasping as they have already seen that small indigo velvet box.

I hear a lot of “aaw”’s and I see my mom tearing up. He starts strumming his guitar. I was surprised to find his best friend singing the second voice and playing the Cajon. Wow! Didn’t plan this but it sure does sound amazing!
