I was on my way to propose to my girlfriend.
That's right.
Propose.
We had known each other for 6 years, and dated for 5 of those years.
She was the love of my life, I was sure of it. And I knew she was special, in more ways than one.
You see, I have an ability.
I can see numbers on people's heads.
Most have zeros, a couple I pass have ones, but my girlfriend (and soon to be wife) has thirty-seven. I think these points mean how special you are. At least, I like to think so.
So far, I have zero. So, I reasoned, in this point system world, maybe marrying her would get me up a point.
Or two.
Or three.
I wanted to be special too.
I walked home slowly, passing the floating billboards and the lonely street lamps.
The world had turned off, every thing except for the full street lamps was gray.
"Hey! Hey you!" I heard in the distance.
Maybe listening to their conversation would give me 'special' points!
I sneaked up to the voice.
"Yes?" I heard someone squeak.
I crouched below a bush, and saw the silhouettes of a big towering guy holding what was shaped like a huge gun, and another guy crouched on the ground trembling.
No, not a guy. A girl.
"Stop right now, girl. I need perk points, ok? To get in the army." The big man said.
I was excited now. He knew about the 'special' points too? Maybe I should start calling them perk points.
"My boss told me that there are some people out there that can see my points. He can, and he said I had an insufficient amount to join the army. And he told me how to get them." He said.
So now maybe I could have points like my girlfriend! This was exciting!
Other then the gun and the big man with zero points on his head.
"So listen up girl. This is how..." The man whispered.
He was whispering something into her ear, but I couldn't hear it from here.
I was so close I could feel the points accumulating on my head already!
The the silhouette of the man drew back, and loaded his gun.
"This is how." He roared, squeezing the trigger.
Boom.
The girl's shadow twitched and fell, lying on the ground. From my hiding spot over here I saw swarms of dark liquid pooling over to me.
What?...
Suddenly, I heard a sound.
It was an audible beep.
And right before my eyes, the zero on the man's head went up to 1.
His eyes were filled with bloodlust as he swirled around and spotted me behind the bush.
He reloaded his gun with a click, and pointed it straight at me.
Boom.
Agony tore through my shoulder, and I clamped onto it, but the pain only made me scream louder.
Sticky red liquid pooled through my fingers rapidly.
Too much blood.
I was loosing too much blood.
Way too m-
I looked up at the man and saw him pointing the gun at my forehead.
"I can't have you learning about my sister, Seer," he exclaimed.
The number on his head was red, and pulsing rapidly.
He looked at me, almost with regret.
"Sorry,"
Boom.
