"Reservation under 'Davis,' table for two?" Jeff offered as the maître d' flipped through his book. The man frowned, not a good sign, then glanced between the two of them with a sardonic smirk.

"You're sure it was for this evening, sir?"

"Sure? Of course I'm sure!" Jeff said, catching himself before his voice rose any louder. "I'm positive" he continued in an undertone. "I made them two months ago."

"Well I do apologize, but there is no reservation under that name."

Jeff looked like he was about to either allow his temper to get the better of him or burst into tears, and it was with some effort that he said, "thank you, that will be all" in an impossibly even voice.

Tracy took him by the arm and led him out. "Come on, it's not that bad. We can just go back to my place and get Chinese take out. My treat," she said with a wink. Jeff covered her hand with his.

"I wanted tonight to be special."

"Every night is special when I'm with you."

And so they had loaded themselves back into Jeff's sleek silver car, Jeff seated behind the wheel with one hand on the headrest behind Tracy's head. He twirled a finger absently through her hair, smiling as the smell of her strawberry shampoo cut through the humid summer air.

The ride back to Tracy's apartment was silent. At least, it was until they came to a spluttering stop on the side of the deserted highway, Jeff just managing to drive into a grassy patch off of the road before the engine stopped. Tracy looked at him questioningly, but he was frantically twisting the key in the ignition.

Tracy tried to hide her smile as Jeff muttered obscenities beneath his breath. He hit the steering wheel with the palm of his hand, and then, his anger somewhat abated, he turned to her with an apologetic expression on his face.

"Battery is dead."

They held eye contact for a few moments before Tracy burst into laughter. Jeff stared at her, then chuckled in response.

"I suppose this is starting to look like the worst date ever."

But Tracy was looking to her right. "Nope, not at all." She opened her door and stepped out, walking a few steps before turning back to Jeff. "Well?"

He sighed and stepped out of the car as well, slamming the door behind him and putting the keys into his suit coat pocket. The sky was that rich blue that comes just before the sun sets, and the air was heavy, with the hint of a breeze.

"Where are we going?" Jeff asked as Tracy pushed her way through a patch of tall grass.

"You'll see..." She said with a playful smile, taking his hand in hers and dragging him along after her.

Once they had reached the end of the patch of grass, Jeff suddenly saw where they were.

"It's... It's beautiful," he said, looking out over the ocean.

"Come on." Tracy kicked her high heels off into the sand, the chipped yellow nail polish on her toenails making the white dress she wore suddenly infinitely more causal. Jeff tossed his suit coat off into the sand and then took his shoes and socks off as well.

"Shall we?"

"Shall we what?"

But Tracy had already run to the water's edge, and was wading in up to her knees. Jeff watched her for a few seconds before rolling up his pant legs and calling out after her "wait up!"

They shivered in the water for a few minutes before deciding to walk the water's edge together instead, holding hands and using Tracy's handbag to hold the seashells and smooth stones that had washed up on the shore.

When the sunset began, they made their way back to where they had left their shoes and coats, Jeff scooping Tracy into his arms and spinning her around before falling back into the sand.

"I love you, Tracy."

She grinned, nestling herself into his arms and resting her head against his chest. "I love you too."

He reached one hand behind him, feeling in his coat pockets. His hand caught on something small and rounded, and he pulled it out.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Yes, I think that they'll deliver the Chinese food here." Tracy was watching the sunset's reflection on the calm ocean.

"That's good to know, but that wasn't what I was going to ask." Jeff stood up suddenly, gently forcing Tracy off of his arm.

"Yeah?" Her face looked up at him, her eyes twinkling. Suddenly they were inches away from his as he knelt in front of her.

"Will you marry me?" He held out the box to her, opening it to reveal a thin silver band with a diamond set in the center.

Tracy looked at him, her mouth open in shock, and then all at once she was laughing and embracing him and saying, "yes, yes, a thousand times yes, Jeff," and then they were kissing as he attempted to fit the ring over her finger.

And as the sun set, the sky was stained pink and red.
