Trinity walked into her Calculus class the next day with a bit of anxiety playing on her nerves. This was the class she shared with Julian. It seemed like he was ignoring her, and this was probably the only time she'd be able to talk to him and explain everything that was going on.
Trinity though back to the day before and cringed. When her parents had brought her cellphone to her, she immediately noticed she had seven texts and one missed call. Every single one was from Julian. She immediately called him back, but her call went to voice mail. She tried again that night after she got home, but had the same result... voice mail.
Sitting at her desk, Trinity watched the door, waiting for Julian to show up. He walked through the door at the last possible second, and the bell rang loudly, signaling that class should be starting. She sighed, knowing that she would have to wait until class was over to talk to him. She watched as he made his way to his desk in the back of the room, pointedly keeping his eyes on the floor and away from her side of the room.
Trinity narrowed her eyes, angry that he was ignoring her. Yes, she had missed the past few days without an explanation, but it wasn't her fault!
Class went by slowly, and Trinity honestly wasn't paying attention. She was getting more and more pissed off as she sat there. How fucking dare he act like such a jerk!
The bell rang at the end of class, and Trinity shot up from her desk, not bothering to grab her things. She marched over to where Julian was getting up and slammed her hands on his desk.
He didn't look at her as he spoke. "Alive are you? With all the ignoring you were doing, I thought you had died."
Trinity was quiet as the words stung her. Tears pooled in her eyes as she stared at him. She was quiet for so long, that he finally looked up and noticed her expression. She looked upset... broken even. His face softened and he opened his mouth to say something, but she just shook her head and walked away.
Julian watched her as she gathered her things and left to lunch. He hadn't meant to hurt her feelings. Hell, he wasn't even sure what he said that made her react that way. He brought his hands up and scrubbed his face roughly.
The past couple days, all he could think about was Trinity. She had gone AWOL and hadn't said a word to him. He didn't want to admit it, but it hit him hard. Julian found somebody who was quirky and cute and had a love for music that rivaled his own. He could see himself getting close to a girl like Trinity, but the past few days had him doubting everything.
There was a voice in his head telling him that he did the right thing in letting her walk away, but there was an even louder voice screaming at him to go find out what was wrong with her.
"Shit," Julian swore, tearing out of the classroom.
Trinity splashed cool water on her face to wipe away the tears and erase the redness that was creeping up her cheeks. Julian's words hurt because he didn't know how close to the truth he was. To hear him talk about her in that way so bluntly made her rethink any thoughts she had about telling him the truth.
Calming herself down, she left the bathroom and headed outside to relax before class, seeing as she wasn't really hungry anymore. Before she could make it out, a hand caught her elbow and pulled her to the side of the hallway, away from everybody else.
Trinity looked down at her feet, knowing that it was Julian. They stood in silence for a moment before her reached up to rest a hand on her arm. Trinity jerked back, shaking her head. "Don't."
Julian sighed, tilting his head back to stare at the ceiling. "I'm... I'm sorry Trin. It's just - you haven't been - I don't know. I don't know how to explain, but I'm sorry. For whatever I said to make you cry, I am so, so sorry.
Trinity leaned back against the wall looked up at him, staring him dead in the eye. "That was a shit apology, and you know it Julian. I tried calling you yesterday - more than once - and I try to approach you and explain what's going on... and you just want to ignore me? Maybe this whole tutoring thing was a mistake. I thought it was going great. I thought we were becoming friends, but maybe not."
Trinity tried to walk away, but Julian put his arm out to stop her.
"I can't let it out, I still let you in."
Trinity blinked. "Are you quoting song lyrics at me?"
Julian grinned. "I don't know. Is it working?"
Trinity just shook her head. She was amused, but she didn't let it show on her face.
"Do me a favour, and ask if you need some help
She said: 'Do me a favour and stop flattering yourself'
How to tear apart the ties that bind?
Perhaps fuck off, might be too kind."
Trinity let a small smile grace her lips. "Fuck off is too kind for what I want to tell you right now."
Julian just continued, switching songs again.
"We couldn't be torn apart, you see we were just like glue."
Trinity rolled her eyes. "We barely know each other."
"You - you've got this spell on me.."
Trinity couldn't help the laughter that spilled from her lips at that line. "Hey! Don't use One Direction against me! That's not fair."
Julian smiled nervously and bit on his lip piercing, tugging at the small hoop. "I'm sorry, I couldn't resist."
She looked up at him, still laughing. He seemed like he was genuinely sorry. And Trinity knew that he didn't know what was going in her life, so he couldn't really be held responsible for being upset or making blunt comments. She bit the inside of her cheek, and cast her eyes to the side.
Julian wasn't having that, though. He grabbed her chin and made her look at him. "Look, I really am sorry. I don't know exactly how to word it, and I hope the lyrics got my message through, but I'm sorry. No matter how upset I was that you ditched these last few days, it wasn't my intention to make you cry or hurt your feelings. Forgive me... darling?"
He smiled as he said the last word, and Trinity's heart melted.
"You're forgiven. And just so you know, there was a -"
Trinity stopped. She forgave him, but did she want to tell him about her cancer? Did she want to change the way their friendship was? Once he knew the truth, everything would change.
And she wasn't ready to risk that.
She cleared her throat and continued, "There was a family emergency. We left early Sunday morning, and I forgot my cellphone at home, so I couldn't tell you. We just got back yesterday. I'm really sorry if I made it seem like I was blatantly ignoring you, because I truly wasn't. It was just... an unfortunate turn of events on my part."
Julian sensed that he wasn't getting the whole truth, but he pushed that away, not wanting to argue. "It's okay. And we - we're okay. Right?"
She nodded, "We're great."
Julian held open his arms. "Friends?"
A voice in Trinity's head reminded her that friends don't lie to friends, but she pushed it away, unwilling to ruin the moment. She stepped into his arms and wrapped her own around his waist as his wound around her shoulders.
"Friends."
