All you felt was falling

All you felt was falling. The air caught in your lungs. The feeling of safe, stable land leaving you behind. You lay, sprawled out, on the ground now. Immobile. But you still could feel the fall. The sensation of musty air whooshing to life as you plummeted down. The terror and butterflies mingled in your stomach, fluttering around in a wild frenzy. But even if that was all you felt, all you could remember was how you you had found yourself down here. You had been taking a hike through the mountains; admiring the serene, beautiful sunset. The soft colours of pink and orange looking like someone had put them there just for you. You were fixated. Too preoccupied with seeing the gorgeous scene to look where you were stepping. And then… then you fell. Through a bush. Down and down. Deeper and deeper. Tumbling through the gaping gorge in the side of the mountain. Swallowed up by the earth.

And that was how you had found yourself here. Lying flat on the ground in a cavernous room carved by time. Your entire body felt sluggish. Slow. Broken. Every movement you made, however slight or grand, was aching and painful. How you survived the fall was beyond you. You sat up, your spinning vision slowly adjusting to this level of light (or lack thereof), and began to look around. Off to the side was an eerily dark break in the rock face. A tunnel of sorts. Leading off to the left. You looked down to find an old, rusty oil lamp. A dim glow still being emitted through the dingy, cracked glass. You weren’t sure how, but how you were thankful that you still had some light. Some form of life down here other than yourself. You looked back over at the tunnel leading off to the side, your hand finding its way to the rusted, wire-like handle of the oil lamp. Your fingers closing around it in hopes to keep the light close. You saw two choices of action here. STAY IN THE CHASM AND TRY TO SURVIVE or VENTURE THROUGH THE TUNNEL.
