Author’s note

Now, before I go any further, I shall tell you a bit about Miss Lazelle and her world.

As you may have already figured out, this story is set in a world parallel to our own.  Already, some things have proved different. Instead of cameras, they have photogrammes, and they are a little behind in the times- still using horse and carts and stuck in the 1800s in an England like ours. Also, there are Animulus which none of you will have any idea of what they are. They are the shadows of the people in this parallel world. They are not like the ones in our world that trail behind us, merely places where the light can’t reach. They are alive, born with a child at birth, shifting shadows at first and then eventually one single form, usually a shadow-like animal.  This animal is believed to be whatever the person was in a past life or in a life soon to come.

So now you have a vague idea of Aurora’s world, I will try to explain a bit about Miss Lazelle briefly as possible.

Aurora Lazelle is a 14-year-old girl. She has honey brown hair and fragments of sky in her eyes. She enjoys playing music on her pianoforte and singing. She is also a talented artist and loves pretty dresses. Aurora, as you have probably guessed, is now an orphan and for those of you who like details, even slightly depressing ones, her parents perished in a large fire that ripped through the area of town they had lived in, only 3 weeks after they discovered that the entire family fortune had been lost at sea. The Lazelle family had been of extreme upper class, but despite this, as you may have thought, Aurora did not let this get to her head. She had been an extremely spoilt, only child with no relatives apart from her parents who would have given her the world. Unfortunately, they can no longer do this.

As ordinary as she seems, apart from being very unfortunate right now, she is actually one of two of the most important people in the Universe. She does not know this however.

I am terribly sorry if I have bored you in any way but I felt that I had to give you a little background that I hope you have found useful!

So, without further ado, on with the story of Aurora Lazelle.
