A dark room, shadows pooled into the corners and crevices, staining the sterile white surfaces. Two figures stood at a counter, clad in pale lab coats, faces obscured. One, probably a woman, tapped her gloved fingers on the tile surface, stared out through a thick plexiglass window to another shady room. Her voice, thick and smooth, rang out in the silence.
"Hmm... Which one should we test next? I hope their scream is as nice as that one's."
"You're one sick bastard..." The other growled, most likely male.
"Aw, that isn't very nice." She remarked, not sounding even mildly irritated. The woman picked up her clean, black plastic clipboard and held it to her chest. She flicked through the uncreased pages, scanning the typed words. A frown bent the corners of her bright red lips downward.
"Hon, let me take a look at your list." The lady wiggled her fingers in anticipation. The other hesitated for a moment, but gave in and handed her his papers. She proceeded snatch it from him and flip greedily through the names listed.
"Pathetic... They don't give us any of the fun ones." She pouted. "Hey, gotta smoke?"
"Obviously they don't give you the advanced ones, since you tear all of your assignments to ribbons." The man snapped, handing her a cigarette from the paper box in his coat pocket.
"You can be so rude sometimes, you know." She replied calmly, placing the cigarette between her lips. She flicked the metal button on the cheap lighter she had with her and the tip ingnited, filling the room with a foul smoke.
"And it's not like you treat yours the best, anyways. Do me a favor, sweetie." She gestured to the white door next to the counter with her hand. "The last one kinda made a mess. Can you clean it up for me?"
The man gave her a disgusted look, but obediently picked up a ragged mop and a bucket of soapy water. He nudged open the door with the toe of his shoe, then let it slam closed as he passed through.
The lady removed the cigarette from her mouth, and there were thick smudges of lipstick at the base. She boredly leafed through the papers her comrade had lent her.
There was a name that caught her attention. A series of capital letters and numbers were printed next to it that made her gasp in shock.
"My, my... This is quite the development..." A carmine smile stretched wide across her face, the bottom rims of her glasses glinted in the dim fluorescent lighting.

"Those worksheets are due tomorrow, so turn them in on time for full credit. Class dismissed." Chairs scratched against the linoleum floor as they were pushed back from their metal desks. The students rose and bowed together in unison swiftly. They straightened up and grabbed their bags and chatted idly to one another.
"Hey, Minami, wanna go out for karaoke later?"
"My boyfriend got in trouble for skipping class..."
"I hope Pukki had her kittens!!~"
It was a pretty nice day outside, that transition from fall to winter. Sunlight streamed in through the big, clean windows, passing through the leaves by the glass and forming patterns on the floor. Dappled darks and lights.
In class 2A, there was a 15 year old girl by the name of Yukari Tsutsui. At the very least, she was odd. It wasn't that she was super outgoing or had an obsessive interest in aliens and the supernatural or something like that. She was indifferent. To everything. Earthquake warning? No sweat. Bus crash? Didn't concern her. Mech robots falling from the sky? Meh. She made very good grades, to the dismay of her classmates, but however smart she was, Yukari was painfully dense. And a jack of all trades, you could say. Except... She just didn't care enough about anything.
