Mitch's Pov-
SQUELCH.
I sat up, sweating. I could feel it. There was a slight pressure in my left eye, and I didn't know what it was. All I knew was that that...noise had woken me up 5 times tonight. But this time I knew for a fact where it was coming from.
I got up. The overhanging sense of drowsiness brought about from waking up at four in the morning had passed a few seconds ago. I dawdled to the bathroom across the icy floorboards. After turning on the light, I headed to the mirror. It felt so strange. Like it was in my eye, but not, well, in my eye. Like it was behind it.
SQUELCH.
There is was again! My left eye seemed to move forward a few millimetres. After closer examination, I realised that my left eye was actually somewhat swollen. But it wasn't red or anything; just swollen. Like it was considerably larger. The pressure in my eye kept building. Christ, if I don't get to a hospital soon-
SQUELCH.
POP.
"JESUS!"
I found myself simultaneously staring at both the sink and the mirror. I couldn't cover up my left eye, but in the spliced image of my reflection I could see it dangling over the basin. Something was worming around in my socket but in my panic I couldn't focus on it. I just watched it slip back in through a hole and into darkness. Oh God.
I couldn't control my breathing anymore. Adrenaline started coursing through my veins. I was starting to see stars out of my left eye, so after washing my hands in the sink I reached down and elevated my eyeball to try alleviate the pressure on the optic nerve. Grabbing my eyeball, however, still seemed to hurt like a bitch. I kept my grasp light, turning out of the bathroom to try find the phone. I needed help, now.
In my agitation I didn't think to turn on the light. I stumbled into the living space, feeling my way to the kitchen where the phone was. But as I proceeded into the pitch darkness, I stubbed my toe on the dining room table. As my world tipped, I instinctively reached out to stop my fall with both hands. With a sickening squidge, I felt (and heard) my eyeball splatter across the floor tiles and my optic nerve rip out of my head. My senses were screaming. I'd never felt so much pain. Panic and fear overcame me. What was happening? Why the fuck was it happening to me?
I paused.
There was dead silence, aside from my heavy, agitated breathing. I felt pressure building behind my left eye.
SQUELCH.
Oh fuck.
