Chapter Two Peyton

Thoughts of the boy were soon pushed to the side as another two Dreads made their way up to the roof. Loki scrambled to get away from one lunging for her, and the other one directed its milky eyes to me. It smiled sadistically and clumsily swung it's arm in a failed attempt to hit me. I backed away until I stood on the very edge of the roof and spared a quick glance at Loki. The smoke was very thick on her side of the roof which was both confusing and enraging the Dread. It was swinging its arms around wildly, and when they connected with nothing, it would let out a strangled scream and proceed to flail even more. Dreads had little eyesight and Loki was using that to her advantage.

I turned my head to look back at my battle and only just had enough time to step to the side as the Dread launched itself at me. The Dread flew straight off the edge of the building and howled in anger as it realized its foolish mistake. I watched it fall to the ground and winced when it connected with the hard ground. It may not be human anymore, but it used to be and I couldn't help but feel sympathy for the lost soul that used to inhabit that body.

A large arm came out of nowhere and hit me straight in the back. I stumbled forward in surprise and stepped straight off the side. I managed to turn in mid-air and grab the edge of the roof. The Dread stood over me, lips curled up in to a terrifying combination between a snarl and a smile. This one had skin like an old cracked road. Weird random shapes made by hundreds of serpentine rips through its skin. There was no blood though. Dreads are not human. They don't have blood.

It had me trapped. There was nothing I could do except let go. I looked down at the Dread that had jumped off the roof and I knew I would end up the same. Just a soulless body laying on the ground. I steeled myself, blocking all thoughts and closing my eyes. I prepared to let go. I prepared to die.

Suddenly, the Dread above me gave a horrific screech and I opened my eyes just in time to see it plummet to the ground, burning as it went, like a meteor racing towards Earth. Except there was no loud noise, no giant hole in the ground to mark where it landed. Just a thunk and a dead body.

I looked up expecting to see Loki standing above me, smiling and reaching her hand down to help me up. But Loki was not there. Instead, standing alive and proud, was the boy from before. The boy that fought them with fire. He was coated from head to toe in a thick layer of soot, and had a smirk on his face that I could tell would never go away.

"Need help?" He asked.

"Nah. I'll just hang here if it's okay with you." I replied sarcastically.

"Funny." He said, reaching down to pull me up. I grabbed his hand in mine and with one strong yank, I was standing back on the roof.

Looking around I saw that all of the Dreads were gone. Well, almost gone. There were charred bodies scattered randomly across the roof. I had to hop over a couple to get away from the side. Loki was sitting up a little ways away holding her ankle.

"C'mon," the boy said. "We need to get out of here before more show up."

I wasn't completely sure whether or not I trusted him, but he had saved our lives, and it wasn't like we had much choice. I nodded my head, and gestured for him to go first. There was no way I was turning my back to a stranger.

I hopped over ten more burnt Dreads before I reached Loki. I hauled her up as carefully as I could, but she still winced.

"Sorry." I said.
