Chapter 7: Micah Pierce
The plane ride to Tampa was extremely awkward. Victoria wouldn't let me out of her sight. Of course, we were on a plane, so I had very limited places to actually run away to.
"Victoria, I'm allowed to go to the bathroom, right?" I asked her sarcastically.
"Can you hold it in for another hour?" she snapped back.
"Just let me go to the bathroom," I hissed. "I really have to go."
She warned me that if I wasn't back in five minutes, she'd come looking for me. Victoria was the type to follow-up on a threat like that. Slowly, I made my way down the aisle to the first-class bathrooms. I was nervous as hell. In less than an hour, I'd be landing in Tampa. First of all, I'd only been there a few times in my life. Secondly, I had five business meetings that I had had to put off because of this little trip. And last but most definitely not least, I was going to be marrying someone seven years younger than me. The first reason didn't really matter and I'd gotten used to the last reason, but it was the second reason that really bothered me. To be away from my work for that long was going to be a hassle. Josh, who worked at Pierce Enterprises, had promised to keep order, but I wasn't sure if I could really trust him. Since I didn't get any reception on the plane (obviously), I made little notes for myself. There were a ton of things I had to do before teh end of the week.
"You really need to stop micromanaging," Victoria said, snatching my phone from my hands.
"And you need to stop treating me like a child," I snapped, tearing my lifeline from her. She scowled and readjusted the rings on fingers.
Ignoring her, I went back to my notes.
Reschedule meeting with Marismo. Secure deal.
Phone conference Wednesday 10:30 am.
Have Brooke send invoices ASAP.
"You know what you're going there for, right?" Victoria asked.
"To commit acts of pedophilia," I mumbled in reply, not taking my eyes off my phone.
Have Brooke fax graphs for the quarter.
New branch underway, check construction plans.
Financial reports for quarter.
"Okay, stop typing and talk to me," Victoria ordered. "I understand that you're upset, but don't take your anger out on me."
Fix budget for next quarter.
"Micah, come on," Victoria insisted quietly. "Let's just talk. Not as you and me, but like two friends."
VIctoria pushed her blonde hair out of her blue eyes and stared at me. In a family of blondes, I was the only one with jet-black hair. I guess I was different from them all from birth.
"Fine," I sighed, stuffing my phone in my pocket reluctantly. "What do you want to talk about, friend?"
She shrugged. "How's everything with you? How's life?"
"Pierce Enterprises is doing great. We recently launched three new products and we opened a new branch." My business was a topic that I was comfortable talking about. When I was talking about the business, I couldn't say anything wrong. I couldn't really say anything that would offend or annoy someone. It was my safety. "I think things are really looking good for-"
"I asked about your life, Micah, not your business," Victoria said, cutting me off.
Was there really a difference?
Hey guys, sorry it took so long to update! School's a bitch, wouldn't you agree? I'd like to apologize again for the super-short chapter. I promise the next one will be longer.
