Civilization V is one of my favorite past times. I love being able to strategize and then watch my plans work out, or sometimes, fail spectacularly. It feels great to watch a city burn to the ground after planning its down fall for the past 60 turns or so.
As much fun as the single player version is, playing this game with friends rarely ever ends well. There is just too much betrayal. When I was a kid, my dad didn't talk to me for a day after I stabbed him in the back during one such game. So when one of my internet buddies wanted to know if I wanted to play a game of Civ I should have known it wouldn't end well.
There were five of us: Me, Gabe (My buddy), Alex (IGN Aspr0), QuantuM, and Edgar. We were all in a teamspeak together so we could all talk to one another. I had a sneaking suspicion that Alex liked me and Gabe later confirmed this. A good 5 turns into that game he private messages me.
"Hey Ellie. You want to ally?"
I just kinda sat there and stared at the screen. I have a rule when it came to allies: don't ally with people close to you on the map. They are the people you are most likely to come in conflict with. Like over who gets that patch of gold next to the sheep and Alex was literally right next to me.
"Ummm, I don't really need any allies right now but I'll let you know for later :)" I typed back to him.
The game continued and sure enough Alex and I started fighting over land. I knew what I had to do. I message Gabe, who was on the other side of the map and asked if he wanted to take out Alex. He agreed because Alex had been trash talking him most of the night and I sent him a couple hundred GP to help him make an army.
Alex caught on when he saw the large number of troops gathering out side his borders.
"Umm, guys, what are you doing?" He asked.
"Nothing." I replied a little too innocently.
"We are going to murder you and burn your capital to the ground." Gabe stated.
After that Alex kinda lost it. He made despite attempts to defend his first city but we took it fairly easily. Next he tried to turn me on Gabe saying that he would just betrayed me after I helped him. I agreed and made myself a silent promise to betray Gabe first, but it wouldn't matter we would never finish the game.
Alex started to get straight up mad after we took his third city. He said some things he probably didn't mean and left the voice chat, and he left the game a few minutes later.
Gabe and I just kinda sat there in the newfound silence for a minute.
"Umm... Wanna play Uno?" He finally asked.
"Why not," I answered as we chose to forget the awkward rage quit that we had caused.
The moral of this story is to not play friendship ruining games with people you barely know and who kinda have a crush on you. I doesn't end well.
