I gasped, sitting up in the dark. I've had the same reoccurring nightmare since I was 5. No, not nightmare. Memory. I sighed, sitting up and throwing my legs off of my bed. I switched on my lamp and shot a glance at my alarm clock. The angry numbers screamed the time at me. 7:30. I grabbed the notebook on my nightstand and flipped it open. I crossed through a few names on my list of job possibilities. I got rejected from three places. I need to find a job for when I turn 16 in a week. I have an interview at the local grocery store in an hour. I put on light khakis and a black collared tee. I ran a brush through my hair while I brushed my teeth and pulled on socks. Braiding my blonde hair, I glanced in the floor length mirror. This is a good interview outfit, I think.
Thundering down the stairs, I swiped an apple from the kitchen and flew out into the garage. The house is still asleep. I pressed the garage door opener, flinching when it made a loud noise. I hopped on my bike, ready to speed off when a movement caught my eye to the right of me. I closed the garage door and step off of my bike. I looked over at the house beside mine. Mace's house. I see him slam his door shut and walks towards his car. He glanced over, feeling my stare. I cursed quietly, and pedaled as fast as possible to my interview.
I arrived 15 minutes early and sat on a bench inside the store, waiting for the manager, Mr. Raygan, to show up. I heard a faint ding as the door opened. I looked up to see Raygan laughing and holding the door open for another guy. I looked over, to find Mace staring at me. I stand up, surprised.
"Oh, Skylar!" he says to me, "I almost forgot about your interview. I apologize, but I've found someone to fill the position you were interested in." He turns to Mace, and shakes his hand enthusiastically. "Congratulations, Mr. Kamba!" I look at him, my jaw ajar. Narrowing my eyes at Mace, I turn to the manager. "Oh.. Okay. Thanks anyway, sir." I shove past Mace and storm out of the store.
I hop on my bike and angrily speed home. How dare he take my job? This was my second interview with Raygan, I was guaranteed to have it! I thought back to his face when he saw me. He didn't look smug like I assumed he would, but more... Surprised? I laugh out loud in disbelief, pedaling harder. Like he would get the same job as me on accident. I rolled my eyes, annoyed, and pulled into my driveway.
