"Hello?" Mason's voice sounds cold and distant through the phone."Hey, it's me," Jewls says quietly.
"What's wrong Jewls?" He asks almost sounding genuinely concerned.
"Are you mad at me?" Jewls asks, "You sound-"
"Excuse me miss," someone says from behind her. A nurse walks up to her and says, "I'm sorry, but you cannot use your phone inside the hospital. We have a patio just around the corner."
"Oh, right of course," Jewls says respectfully. The nurse points her in the direction of the patio and she heads over to it.
"Hello? Jewls?" Jewls hears Mason's voice in the distance coming from her phone.
"Sorry, the nurse was reminding me that I can't use a phone in the hospital. I'm outside now," she says.
"No."
"What?" Jewls asks confused.
"You asked if I was mad at you," Mason says, "No, I'm not mad at you. I'm not completely happy with you, but I could never be mad at you. I meant what I said earlier. I love you Jewls."
"I know and I love you too," Jewls says. "I want us to be truthful to each other too."
"Then why don't you?"
"Because... You know what? I don't even have an answer for that," Jewls says, "Can you come over here?"
"What?" Mason asks.
"Can you come over here, like to the hospital?" She asks.
"Yeah, sure I guess I can."
"Great, I'll meet you outside in a few." Jewls heads back to Esmerelda's room and finds Dimitri no longer playing, but resting his head on his arms beside her. Her hand is wrapped up in his as if he refuses to let her go. Jewls admires the significant simplicity of the moment and without a word steps back out to meet Mason in the front.
...
About twenty minutes later, Mason arrives. Jewls laughs when she sees that he is in his plaid pajama pants, t-shirt, and black north face sweater. "Couldn't even dress up to come see me?" She says from across the parking lot.
"It's a hospital, not a night club," Mason rolls his eyes playfully.
The second they are within touching distance of each other, they pull each other into a warm embrace. "I'm really sorry," Jewls whispers.
"I know, I am too. I should be able to trust you," Mason says.
"I understand why you don't. Especially after the way I treated you," Jewls sighs.
Mason pulls back and places his hands on the side of her shoulders and says, "You can't scare me off that easily."
"I know and I love that," she smiles at him.
"Now what is it that you have me over here for?" Mason asks.
"I better just show you," she grabs his hand and begins walking him into the hospital. When they get to Esmerelda's floor they try to sneak back into the room without being seen by the nurse that told Jewls she couldn't use her phone. They get to the room and Jewls breathes in deeply, "Mason like I said before this is not my secret, but we are together and that means you should know what I know."
"Jewls you're scaring me," Mason says feeling nervous.
"Trust me, you can't be more scared than me right now. Promise you won't tell anyone and I mean anyone."
"Jewls...I promise."
She opens the door and Dimitri is still asleep at the bedside. She gestures Mason to look inside and as soon as Mason sees Mr.Dorzen, his mouth drops open. Jewls, afraid of waking him up, pushes Mason back out the room. Before he is completely out, he notices the way Mr.Dorzen is holding Esmerelda's hand.
"What is Mr.Dorzen doing here?" Mason asks, "And why is he holding her hand like that? And why was his cello here?"
"Mason calm down," Jewls whispers, "Let's go to the waiting room." They walk over and they sit down. The room is completely empty and the lights are dimmed down.
"Jewls, are they together?" Mason asks.
Jewls doesn't look up at him, but sighs, "Yes."
"Since when?"
"I don't know. I found out earlier today."
"Is that why you were so distant?"
"Yes," Jewls says still not looking up.
Mason begins piecing everything together and gasps, "Is this why you were at the police station? Did you tell the cops about them?!"
"No, I couldn't," Jewls looks up quickly, "He cares so much for her and she's in love."
"What about your parents?"
"I don't know yet," Jewls says, "I don't even know what I'm going to do yet."
"Jewls you're not planning on ratting them out, are you?"
"I don't know Mason. What they're doing isn't right, but they are in love, but it's against the law!" Jewls rambles. Mason grabs her hand, which stops her instantly. She looks down at their hands together and then up at Mason. "Just tell me I'm doing the right thing. Tell me that letting him in the room was the right thing. Tell me that going to the police station and not saying anything was the right thing."
"Jewls, I can't tell you what the right thing is," Mason sighs, "But I can tell you this. This," he lifts up their entangled hands, "Love, it only comes once or twice in a lifetime. And it is never easy to give up, whether it's right or wrong."
"I know," Jewls says. "But how could she do this to me? How could she put me in such a difficult situation? Why couldn't she just fall in love with a regular guy?"
"In what world do people decide who they fall in love with?" Mason asks. "She probably never meant for this to happen, but like anything in life, it just did."
"I guess..."Jewls sits quietly for a moment, "So what should I do?"
"I don't think you should do anything."
"What do I have to do?"
"Again," Mason gives her a small smile, "I don't think you have to do anything."
"When did you become so wise?" Jewls laughs.
"When we first kissed. I knew I wanted you and that if I wanted you then I'd have to keep up with you," he kisses her hand, "You must be rubbing off on me."
She giggles quietly and leans into him and whispers, "To Esmerelda and Mr.Dorzen."
He leans even closer to her and whispers, "To love." Their lips lock and in that moment, it becomes clear to Jewls that if Esmerelda was lucky enough to find love then she would not be the one to ruin it. She is not going to tell.
