September 24. Seventeen. She woke up to her father and mother, busy preparing her favorite food in their kitchen for her party later. Marina was not a fan of grand birthday parties. As long as people show up, she'd already announce the party to be a success.
To the Durands, birthday parties meant family reunions. Usually, they would invite as many relatives as possible, but on that year, they changed the rules a little, allowing Marina to invite some of her friends from school.
This wasn't a very hard task for her since there had always been that someone whom she'd been wanting to invite, one of her friends from school, Allexis "Yex" Shuster.
On that morning, Marina tried to catch up with Yex in the hallway. Yex was just about to go on a choir practice. Before Marina could even speak, Yex had already greeted her Happy Birthday.
Marina smiled widely at Yex and invited her to go to her house after school for her birthday party. She was a bit shocked since she had never been invited to any of Marina's birthday parties, nobody was, but Yex happily accepted the invitation.
Marina had always been fond of Yex. She's funny, is really good at singing, smart, approachable, easy spirited, optimistic, kind and is a good type of loudmouth. Back when Yex was still in middle school, the two of them were the kind of friends who just knew each other by name and face but never really interacted that much. They would exchange smiles in the corridors but that was just about it.
Yex was a year older than Marina so they were never in the same class.
When Marina reached high school, most of her classmates studied at St. Dominic Savio High School so she barely knew anyone in her new school.
Everyone seemed to be older and bigger than her, even the ones from her grade. It actually scared the shit out of her. Marina felt like a puppy in a pack of wolves. You could say she was an outcast, the lonely girl at school.
And then one day, a familiar face approached her during a football match between St. Bernard's and a rival school, asking if player number 21 has a cute butt.
And that's how it all started.
Back at Florian, everyone called her 'Al', 'Ally', 'Lex' and many more names that comes from 'Allexis' but constantly changed when she got to high school.
The Spanish teacher, Mrs. Javier was checking the attendance on the first day of school when she mispronounced her name as 'Ayexis'. Nobody corrected Mrs. Javier, not even Yex. It was always like that during Spanish class, until one day, everyone just decided to go with it and started calling her 'Ayexis' which quickly escalated to what she is called now, 'Yex'.
Marina found the story quite funny, almost reminded her of the legends they made her read on third grade.
Yex was the one who made her feel comfortable at St. Bernard's. She even introduced Marina to some of her friends. They were all nice to her so she quickly warmed up to them.
Marina was happy that Yex studied at St. Bernard's. She became Marina's older sister, but not in a way where she treats her like she's only six years old. She still remembers when Yex brought her to a party once, the one where she got insanely drunk and Marina had to ask the sober seniors for help. The experience did not end well but it was still funny as hell.
