My brother, Ashton, and I walked into Mission High School on the far side of Durum, North Carolina. We both wore black, V-neck, short-sleeve t-shirts, and black skinny jeans along with trench coats. It was stormy but steamy on this mid August day. We were twins, fifteen years, just started our junior year. People knew we were siblings because we were the only ones protecting North Carolina from it's biggest problem, vampires. We're Davis', one of the biggest and the best vampire hunter families in the country, it's weird.
We walked to the main office to get our list of classes because we missed open house on account of training, our father insisted. The lady we've seen for the past three years smiled at us and handed us our schedules. We nodded in thanks and walked out.
My friend, Brandon Forrest, ran up and hugged me. "How was you're summer, Haley?" He pulled away and whipped the red liquid from his chin, noticing my brother.
"Boring, I didn't get to do anything because of training." I laughed nervously.
Ashton ran a hand through his long blonde hair. "Awesome seeing you again. We have to go." He growled and pulled me with him out the door.
I glared at him. "What is your problem with him? You know he drinks from animals. He's in our homeroom so you're going to have to deal with him."
He blushed a little but shook his head. "I know his intentions. You know our parents hate you hanging out with bloodsuckers and I'm not that fond of it either."
I scoffed, mostly because I saw the blush on his cheeks. "You don't feel that way. I hate our family sometimes. Why'd you make me wear this?"
"It makes us stand out less, we've all told you that."
We were in a trench coat in the middle of summer, there's no way we didn't stand out. We walked into our homeroom and sat next to each other as the bell rang. I noticed a lot of my friends were in the class and smiled, seeing Brandon walk through the door.
He stood in front of my desk and smiled. "Can I get a hug? Or will grumpy-pants over there not allow it?" He asked me, swooping his red hair off his forehead and winking at Ashton.
I wrapped my arms around him, ignoring the glares and somewhat longing looks coming from my brother. He hugged me tight and buried his face in my shoulder. The blue t-shirt he had on complemented his soft, cream colored skin. His eyes, that were a few shades darker than his shirt had microscopic flecks of silver in them, a sign of vampirism, but one that drinks animal blood, and explaining my brothers' manic actions.
I let go of him and took my seat, him sitting to my left because my brother was to my right. He flashed a polite smile at Ashton, causing him to growl and point to where his stake was tucked in his belt loop.
We missed the longing in Ashton's eyes.
"Why does he hate me?" he asked in a low, hurt voice.
"He doesn't hate you, Brandon. He just doesn't like vampires." My brother had the biggest love for the red-head.
Just as the bell rang, a tall boy with black hair, walked in and sat behind me.
"Hey, I'm Haley Davis." I told him, turning to face him.
He just stared down at his desk.
"Okay..." I turned back to Brandon. "Do you know him?" I asked Brandon.
He shook his head. "I don't, but I can tell he's a vampire though, his eyes have black around the edges, which also means he drinks human blood, so be careful and make sure Ashy is too. Make sure he doesn't piss him off or we might all end up dead." A shiver shook him, even though he didn't feel cold.
I laughed, my brother's a huge pain sometimes but I'd be lost if he wasn't with me.
Our teacher walked in. "Welcome to your Junior Homeroom. I see we have a new student, can you introduce yourself?"
The boy behind me sighed but stood. "I'm Zach East, my family just moved here from Washington, don't push my buttons." He warned, quite playfully, but smiled, showing outstretched canines.
I saw my brother grip his stake. The tight muscles in his arms made me want to scream. His forest green eyes were glued on Zach's back, that was turned to him. I shook my head in his direction. He ran a hand threw his hair but eased off his weapon. He hated how I stuck up for vampires, though I'm a hunter.
Christian Douglas walked in the front door of the school. He ignored the vampires, if he could. The big smile on his face was, if you knew him, fake. His home life sucked and he had to struggle to get out the door without his housemates bruising his body. There wasn't really a reason he could think of, they just hated him. It just sucked.
A girl strolled over to him. "I just noticed, you're way too hot to not know me. I'm Emily."
He smiled politely at her. "I'm not interested, sorry. I've got my eyes on someone." He said thinking of his badass best friend. He walked away from her and into the office to grab his schedule, he glanced at it and groaned. He had to take two English's and Biology again this year. The idea of school bored him, he'd be lucky to graduate.
He made his way to homeroom, groaning, because he was going to get yelled at for being late. It wasn't his fault, he couldn't find his bag this morning. His family probably hid it from him. He put on some shorts and his flash t-shirt and walked out of the door, without a second glance at his family.
He walked in Homeroom and sat in the back, hoping the teacher wouldn't notice he was late.
No luck. "Christian Douglas, late on the first day. Imagine that."
He shrugged it off, teachers didn't like him, never had. "I, unlike most people have a reason, but I'll spare it for you, 'cause you wouldn't believe me anyway." He explained with a cocky smile but no one saw the sadness in his eyes. No one ever believed him about his parents treating him like shit, because they knew his brother, Patrick. Their parents treated his brother like a king and him like a punching bag. Haley Davis was the only one who might care and she's got enough on her plate.
NEW STORY I'VE BEEN WORKING ON FOR A WHILE. THIS IS JUST THE FIRST CHAPTER. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK.xx
