It's bad I know. Crushing on your best friend is never a good idea. You can destroy things, you can mess things up and you start to act weird around them and take everything they say in 37 different ways, that could mean that they are trying to tell you something. But I know thats not the case. Dylan and I had been friends for as long as I could remember, our parents had been friends before we were born and so it just so happened that we grew up together. Went to our first swimming lesson together, first camping trip together, rode our first bike at the same time, I still beat him at that though. You could say Dylan and I were inseparable. But now watching him work on his boat, I feel something completely different for him. Shit! This freaking crush needs to disappear. He is in love with his girlfriend Sarah and I seriously don't want to mess that up.
"Riley, can you pass me the hammer?" He called out to me.
"Get it yourself you lazy butt, I'm writing over here, you know that assignment I have due in a week," I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah sure you are," he laughed, "you haven't typed a word in about 15 minutes, to busy staring at me, what do you like what you see?"
He gets up and starts doing this stupid dance which on any other day would make me laugh.
I giggle a little, "No not really, just looking at the grease you have all over your face, you really are a mess you know."
He jumps out of the boat and looks in the mirror that hangs just inside the house, he looks at his watch.
"Shit, why didn't you tell me earlier?" He yells at me.
"Huh?" I ask.
"Sarah is coming over in 10 minutes to see the boat, I look like a mess, she is gonna be mad!" He frantically rubs his face with the rag he had in front of him which does nothing but spread the grease further across his face.
"Oh Sarah is coming round. You didn't tell me this," I shrug.
"I didn't well yeah she is," he looks back in the mirror flustered, "Can you stay here why I go inside and take a shower, and wait for Sarah to come please?"
At times like this I wish I wasn't so nice, "sure." It's not that Sarah is a bad person, she just doesn't appreciate Dylan as much as she should. It's almost as though she takes him for granted.
I sit in the backyard and type a couple more lines of the assignment when I here a car pull up. I shut down my laptop and walk over to meet her.
"Riley!" she screams.
"Hey Sarah, how are you?"
"I'm great, and you? Where is Dylan? Wait why are you here I thought it was just Dylan and I going to the falls," she asks puzzled only really caring about the last two questions.
"He is in the shower, and it is, I was leaving but he had to take a shower and didn't want you sitting out here all by yourself," I say, cause he is so sweet and it would be the only reason he would want me to meet her cause he couldn't.
"Oh, well Dylan needs to realise I'm a big girl and can look after myself, you can run along now. I'll tell him you said bye," she sneered.
I laugh at just how fake she is, super excited to see me at first and then bam, as soon as it means a conversation needed to be had, right back in my face.
"I think I'll tell him bye myself thanks, I'm pretty sure we agreed to go see the new Fast movie tonight, just wanna check its still on," I say back half telling the truth but also because I know she'll twist the truth somehow and if I left Dylan would be mad at me for leaving.
Just then Dylan walks out in jeans that fit him so nicely and no shirt, water still dripping down his abs.
"Sarah!" he throws on his shirt much to my dismay and pulls Sarah in for a hug.
"Hey babe, you ready to go?" Sarah asks.
"Almost," he smiles and turns to me, "are you going to come with us?"
Sarah gives me the death glare, "no, I have to finish this assignment but I'll see you tonight right?"
"Oh yeah forgot about that, yeah tonight! Can't wait to see some Cars!" He was super excited.
"Well have fun you two, nice to see you again Sarah," I waved and walked to my car.
I seriously need to get these feelings of distaste away from Sarah. If Dylan loves her, then so should I.
