Rosalind POV:
I quickly silenced my alarm as soon as it went off, my heart thudding with dread. I must not wake HIM. My step father abused me and took pleasure in it - if I did even the slightest thing wrong, he would beat me for it. My father had died soon after I was born, and my mother died when I was 5. I exhaled quietly when nothing stirred. I silently got out of bed, wincing and limping from my bruises. I quickly got dressed, tied my hair up, packed my bag and walked silently out the door. I had moved here on the weekend so this was going to be my first day at this school. I was turning 18 in a couple of months, then I could get away from Oliver (my step father).
I walked, head down, into school, limping slightly but trying hard to hide it. I didn't want to attract any attention to myself. I walked to the office and got my time table.
As I walked back out, I accidentally bumped into someone. I jumped back and flinched automatically as I waited for the blow to come. 'Watch where you're going!' a deep voice threatened coldly. It was a scary voice, yet it still sent shivers down my spine which had nothing to do with being scared.
I looked up quickly, taking in the persons appearance. He was tall, waaaay taller than my 5'1 - he had to be at least 6'6, he had a wide chest, you could clearly see his abs, bulging arms, piercing gray eyes and black hair. 'S-sorry,' I mumbled softly, looking down quickly.
'You better be!' he snarled.
I shrunk back, frightened, but something told me not to be afraid of him.
I glanced up again and accidentally made eye contact. His eyes rounded with shock, then realization flashed through them and his eyes turned soft and gentle. I couldn't help but notice how handsome he looked when he wasn't frightening me. Then I saw him reach for my arms and I snapped out of my daze, suddenly worried about him finding my new bruises on my arms. I quickly put my head down and scurried past him, scared. I heard him shout after me, but I just walked faster and melted into the crowd.
I had better things to be worrying about than why he looked at me like that. Things like: would I get beaten tonight? Would I rest tonight? Things like that. I needed to avoid him, seeing as he looked like the schools badass and he would attract attention to me. I rushed to my first class, english, and sat down in the very back right hand corner. As soon as I sat down, the warning bell went off. I noticed someone sitting next to me and the whole class suddenly went quiet. I looked up and the guy from before, but I quickly looked back down again before he could recognize me. 'What are you all staring at?!' he snarled dangerously.
I noticed with amusement that everyone immediately started making conversation and looked away from us. 'Im Ryan Goode, what's your name?' he asked gently, as if afraid of scaring me.
'R-Rosalind Trine,' I stammered softly, not looking at him.
I could feeling his piercing gray eyes staring at me, so I looked up timidly. He smiled at me and I looked down again, blushing lightly. I noticed, too late, a small, slim hand aimed directly at my face. My eyes widened and I flinched, squeezing my eyes shut and waiting for the blow to hit. But it never did. I opened my eyes slowly to see Ryan holding the girls wrist in a tight grip, his face set harshly in anger. I flinched away from him, scared of the anger clear on his face. He snarled something quietly to the girl and she looked like she was going to pee her pants. She nodded quickly when he released her hand and scurried away. I huddled into my seat, as far away as I could from the boy - definitely the schools badass.
He turned to me, saw my frightened features, and his expression softened. His mouth curled up into a smile, his eyes lost their hard edge and he just looked so approachable. 'Its alright,' he soothed me,'i'm not going to hurt you - ever. I swear.'
I relaxed and cautiously slid myself closer to him. 'Im sorry for scaring you before,' he muttered as the teacher entered the room.
'As you should be,' I whispered back, then immediately clamped my mouth shut, eyes wide.
To my relief, he just chuckled and I relaxed.

At lunch time, I bit my lip, looking longingly at the canteen, then reluctantly turned away and sat down by myself, leaning back on a random tree. I didn't have money for food and I wasn't allowed to take food from the house without Oliver's permission. Which I rarely ever had. I sighed, ignoring my grumbling stomach and closed my eyes as I rested my head back on the tree. 'No lunch?' a deep voice asked.
I immediately tensed and looked up and saw Ryan staring down at me with soft eyes. I let out a soft sigh of relief. 'I-I was in a hurry for school so I forgot to pack.' I said softly, only half lying.
He 'hmm'ed and sat down beside me. He was so warm, and I was so cold, so I couldn't resist scooting up against him hesitantly. I glanced up at him and he grinned down at me softly. I relaxed and snuggled into his side more. He shifted around and produced a sandwich from his pocket. He held it out to me,'here.' he said.
I eyed it warily. 'Whats in it?' I asked cautiously.
He chuckled,' don't worry, it's nuttella.'
I grinned and thanked him before taking the sandwich and one of the cut up pieces. I handed the other half back back to him. He tried to give it back to me, but I protested. 'I can't eat all of your sandwich! It will make me feel made for making you go hungry!!'
He sighed and reluctantly ate half of his sandwich. A cold breeze sprung up and I shivered, nestling more closely into Ryan's side. He put his arm around me, effectively blocking out the chill. I sighed with relief, feeling completely safe for the first time in my life. It was a weird feeling, but it was a good weird, a weird I could get used to...
I cringed as I noticed girls glaring at me, so much for going un noticed. As much I knew I should, I couldn't bring myself to move away from him. To get up, thank him for the lunch and run away like the coward I am. Instead, I enjoyed his company while it lasted. The girls glares intensified as he gently pulled me closer and I knew I had to move if I wanted to go un noticed. 'I have to go,' I muttered, standing up.
I grabbed my bag and hurried away. I felt his confusion and something told me to go back to him. But I couldn't. I scurried to my locker and grabbed my books for my next class. The bell went and I rushed to class. I chose a seat at the front, assuming that Ryan would sit at the back. I kept my head down and my hair covering my face. He walked casually into class and sat at the back, just like I thought he would. I felt, rather than saw, him scan over the class. I felt his gaze pass over me and closed my eyes in silent relief.

When the bell rang to end the period, I grabbed my bag and melted into the crowd. I prided myself on my ability to melt into crowds where no one would notice me. I would just look like another person.
Art now. I rushed to the class room and quickly entered it. I chose a seat in a desk in the middle. A girl came and sat next to me. I smiled shyly at her. 'Im Rosalind, what's your name?' I asked.
'Ash,' she replied, smiling.
'Nice name,' I complimented.
'Thanks. So, how are you finding Alice High?' she asked.
'Its alright, I guess. A bit boring but you get that with high schools.' I replied.
She laughed, then abruptly stopped, gawking at something. I followed her gaze and saw Ryan about to sit at our desk. I blew out a breath, there goes my avoiding him. 'May I sit with you ladies?' he asked in his deep voice.
His eyes softened when he gazed at me, but hardened ever so slightly when he looked at Ash. 'Sure, why not.' I replied while Ash turned and gawked at me.
'What?' I asked, curious.
She leant forward and whispered in my ear,'you just invited Ryan Goode, badass of the school, to sit with us!'
I frowned,'so? He's nice.'
She gasped at me then shook her head. 'I give up,' she muttered.
I smirked at her. I turned back to Ryan to see him studying me with his piercing gray gaze. He made eye contact and I trembled, not used to the affection his eyes were shining brightly with. Thankfully, the teacher arrived then, bringing the class to order and making Ryan break eye contact.
I concentrated hard on my work, quickly putting my work away and practically running in my haste when the bell went. I needed to get home before Oliver and make dinner. Someone caught my arm in a warm, strong grip. I freaked, I needed to get home before he came home! I looked up and recognized Ryan. I tried to wrench my arm out of his grip, but he just frowned and tightened his grip slightly. Thinking fast, I let myself go limp and dropped to the floor and out of his grip. Then I raced out of school, ignoring his startled yell from behind me. I quickly ran to my house, relieved to find his car not in the driveway. I rushed into the house, locking the door behind me. I dumped my bag in my room before starting dinner.
*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*.*
When dinner was done, I took a quarter for myself in a plastic, disposable container and I put the rest on a plate in the oven for Oliver. Then I took the container and plastic fork outside and snuck into the woods. I was starving and I knew this would be all the food I would get until tomorrow night. I greedily ate the food but stopped halfway through, a strange feeling washing over me. It was a mixture of protection and being watched intensely. I looked around, studying the forest intently. My eyes found the shape of a extremely large wolf. My eyes widened and it stepped forward. It's pelt was a mixture of grey's and silver's and black. It was gorgeous. It's eyes were a piercing gray. For some reason, I relaxed, though I have no clue why. He, for I could clearly tell it was a he, lay down on his stomach and whined softly, wagging his tail. I gave him a small smile and he gave returned it with a wolfy grin of his own, tongue hanging out and all. I laughed and he crept over to me and placed his large head on my lap. I gently scratched behind his ears. He closed his eyes. I stroked down his neck and ate the rest of my dinner with one hand.
I felt peaceful for the first time in my life. But then that moment ended. 'Rosalind!' Oliver's deep, menacing voice boomed.
I cringed and quickly got up, placing the container on the ground promising myself that I would get it later. I ran back to the house and saw Oliver standing in the back doorway. 'You little skank, get your ass over here!' he yelled.
I flinched and a deep, menacing growl reverberated from the trees. I turned my head slightly and saw the wolf that had made me feel peaceful glaring at Oliver with bared teeth. Oliver grabbed my arm in a tight grip, ready to pull me inside the house for a beating. I whimpered in fear softly.
The next thing I knew, a blur of grey, silver and black fur rushed past me and tackled Oliver to the ground. The wolf snarled in his face, eyes gleaming with hatred. Oliver immediately let go of me, and I stumbled out of his reach, shaking with terror. The wolf's hackles were up and his muscles tense. I backed up into the woods. The wolf's ear twisted to face me. He flicked his tail at me, clearly signally for me to go in deeper. I went back a couple of feet before stopping again. Oliver struggled under him, fear bright in his eyes. The wolf bit his arm suddenly before jumping off of him and bounding into the woods, towards me. He whined when he reached me and nudged my leg, urging me on, looking back over his large shoulder at Oliver. Shaking with fear, I ran on, the huge wolf at my side the whole time. When we reached a clearing, he allowed me to lie down on the soft grass. Shock suddenly caught up with me and I started crying. The wolf wrapped himself around me, a comforting rumbling coming from his throat. I twisted around and buried my head in his furry neck. I grabbed fistfuls of his fur and struggled to concentrate on inhaling his warm, safe and comforting scent.
When I finally stopped crying, I wiped the tears from my cheeks and kissed the wolf's cheek. 'thank you,' I muttered. 'I think I'll call you... Fluffy!'
He just snorted. I laughed at him and wrapped my arms around his neck, pressing my face into his fur as I slowly drifted off to sleep...
