Chapter Two: Almost Showtime
Emily's Point Of View
***
I sit there, backstage. Claire rushes over with a makeup bag. I smile as she starts doing my makeup. "You're going to look so great! The guys are gonna be falling over you," she comments. My eyes widen. "The guys will be here!?" I freak. Claire rolls her eyes and shoves me back in my seat. "I invited them," she says. I stand again and jump out of my seat. "Oh no... No, no, no! I... I have to change e the whole show!" I slam my hands on her shoulders. "They can't know!"
Claire sets her stuff down and grabs hold of my hands. She looks me in the eyes. "Emily. They don't know what this stuff feels like... Let them take the ride on this roller coaster, okay?" I sigh and sit back down, shaking my head and closing my eyes. "You're right, you're right... I should calm down," I say. Claire opens her makeup bag and starts to do my makeup. Maybe she's right. Maybe they don't understand depression like me. It won't hurt to let them know the feel of it, Right? I open my eyes.
"Claire... What if they ask about my bracelets?" I mumble. Claire sets down the concealer and grabs a stick of eyeliner. "Then tell them they're just for fashion," she says with a soft smile. I sigh and keep my mouth shut. I'm not ready to answer questions about myself. A new start is all I want. Maybe even an identity change. I've got to think things through more. What will I say? What will I do? I can't answer any other questions except those stupid best friend quiz questions in magazines and such... My whole entire plan will be ruined tonight, no doubt...
Claire finishes my makeup. I open my eyes and see the dark rings around my eyes and the pale on my lips. Something about it screams 'upset' but with a hint of 'I love it'. I smile and hug Claire. "It looks great! Thank you," I say. She shakes her head and hands me a dress, a flannel, and a few necklaces. "This will look way better on you with this outfit," she says. I nod and head towards the bathroom. A girl steps in front of me and smiles like a huge bitch.
"Beauty before monster! Y'know, there is such a difference between beauty and ugly," sheays in a snotty teenager voice. I just smile, cock my hip, and pull out a cigarette. "Did you know that there's a difference between wearing makeup and having Crayola gang bang your face? I'm not sure about you, but this monster has a killer show to put on tonight, and crayola's shut shouldn't keep 'em waiting!" I then push her out of my way, lighting the cigarette and walking into the bathroom. I lock the door behind me and pull off my shirt.
I look at all of the cigarette burns on my stomach and take a deep breath. I then force the cigarette out on my skin, without making a single noise. I throw the cigarette into the pack for later so I can smoke it. I pull on the dress, a black lace and lavender base, no sleeves, no straps, about three inches above my knees. I smile at the colors. I've always loved purple. I pull on the flannel, a very light fabric and purple, Grey, and black. I pull off my Capri's and pull on a pair of black and white skull leggings from my bag. I pull my converse back on.
I walk out, where that same girl is cracking her knuckles and glaring at me. I sigh, shake my head, and pull out my pocket knife. It is stained with my own blood, but don't tell anyone that. The girl's eyes widen as I open the blade and lick it. She balls her fists up as I put the knife back. She then flies at me with her fist, but I dodge her quickly and send her fist into the wall. She let's out a small shriek and I laugh.
I walk over to Claire, who is holding my acoustic, and sit down. "What time do the guys show?" I ask, taking my guitar. She looks at her phone as Sally's Song, the Amy Lee cover, plays. "Well, I'm about to find out," she says, tapping her phone a few times. She puts it away as the music stops and smiles at me. "They're here," she says. I gulp and fling the strap of my guitar on my chair. I stand with Claire and slowly walk behind her. Claire is fast, so I just slowly follow her trail.
"You guys made it!" I hear her cheer. I take a deep breath and step out next to her. The guys smile at me. "Hey, you," Chris says. I smile. "Hey."
"So you're performing tonight?"
"A whole show."
Claire smiles wider. "So... Emmy," she starts, staring at me and then Chris, "we're going to get a drink, so we'll be back." She clutches onto Chris' arm and pulls him over to the bar, winking at me. I could feel a blush creep onto my cheeks. "Yeah, I think we're going to check out the stuff around here," Chasey says, dragging Porter and Doogie to the other side of the room. I stare after them as my face goes redder. They planned this, didn't they? Claire and Chris... Now it's awkward! I stand there, next to Brannon, the both of us staring off into space. "So..."I start, "I um... I like your shirt." Brannon looks down at his Three Days Grace shirt and then back to me. "Thanks...." he stumbles. We stand there for another awkward two or three minutes. "I'm sorry, you don't mind if I smoke, do you?" I ask, taking out the cigarette from earlier.
"Oh, no, not at all. Go ahead!" Brannon says. I nod and light the cigarette. "I didn't know you smoked." I shrug and take a puff. "There's a lot you don't know about me still," I say. Brannon tilts his head slightly. "Like...?" I sigh and sit down. He sits next to me. "Well, I used to have a Japanese boyfriend that named my dog after himself," I say. Brannon laughs and I smile. "I'm serious! He named it Mikira!" Brannon laughs again. "That's a nice name... For a dog." I laugh slightly. "Yeah... But really. There's a lot you don't know."
We talk for another few minutes, and I look at the time. "Damn, I have to finish getting ready for the show. See you later?" I say. Brannon nods with a smile. I put out my cigarette and walk backstage. I grab my guitar and sling it over my shoulder. I sit in my seat and sigh. This is going to be a long night...
