I remember her a lot. Not recent years, but a decade ago, when she was a little school girl with frizzy hair and a Supernatural ambition. Even another decade before that, aged four I remember her galloping towards me in pleated dresses and frilly socks.
That was when Mr. And Mrs. Hedvigh were still alive, when Cait was a kid who had no idea of anything.
I also remember Dean, one time, awkwardly holding her as a baby, when Peggy had passed her onto him when dad and Frederick needed help outside with something. I can't remember what but the image of Dean, eighteen years old, plaid shirt, messy hair and brash, cradling something so pure and innocent set my heart on fire as he gently smiled. He saw me grin and instantly passed baby Cait onto me,
"I'd better go and see if dad needs a hand." He coughed awkwardly and left me with her, in a soft pink baby grow, the sea blue eyes gazing into mine.
After our mother died and dad was on a case we would seek refuge at the Hedvigh's. There may nit have been much room but it was cosy, and Amanda and Peggy were very hospitable, drinks and food they would immediately bring to us and dad and Frederick would talk Hunter talk which meant nothing to Cait. Each time we went we never really saw how much she had grown.
But what I do remember most vividly of her being young was when we just dripped in and ended staying for dinner and supper as usual. Cait answered the door, she was home alone again, it was a Saturday so that meant that Peggy was out at work and William was with an old friend. She gazed up at us and grinned, she had all her adult teeth now but her hair had been cut to just below her shoulder and was held back with a head band, her eyes were still the same.
"Password." She blocked the doorway and crossed her arms, she had the remote control in her hand.
"What?" Dean said,
"You know what it is."
"No."
"Sing it!"
"Cai-"
"Go on, Dean, she ain't gonna let us in." I smirked,
"Shut up, Sammy."
"Go on!" Both Cait and I prompted,
"Fine. We're off to-" he mumbled, but Cait couldn't contain herself,
"See the wizard the wonderful wizard of Oz!!!" Dean looked blankly at us both,
"Come now, Dorothy let us enter munchkin land!" And Cait ran through to the kitchen,
"Follow the yellow brick road, Dean." I elbowed him.
We closed the door behind us. Cait had set the DVD going in the living room and had discarded the remote control on the sofa. She sat on the kitchen side and looked at us.
"What have you done wrong now?" She said,
"Nothing." Dean reached for the fridge.
"No drinking while driving!"
"I wasn't gonna."
"The day Dean Winchester has a beer and takes the bus will be the day the world truly will end."
"Very funny. Anyway."
"Anyway, what?"
"This monster is hungry." Cait reaches into the box of Twinkies and throws a couple to us.
"Peggy is going shopping later."
Dean and I sit on the sofa listening to the extremely annoying Wizard of Oz. We watch the colourful screen for a minute or so before Cait comes throw with a plastic floral tray.
