"Mummy?" Seven year old me bounded down the stairs, my hair flying out around me. "Can you come and play with me, please?"
When I got to the bottom of the stairs I looked around, but couldn't see my mother anywhere. Our stairs went directly in to the living room and there was a doorway that joint the living room to the kitchen. But I still couldn't see her.
"Mummy?" I called out again and plodded through the house to the back garden. "There you are!" I grinned widely and ran outside.
There were three large men standing in the middle of our massive garden, my mother and father standing in front of them. The three men were shirtless and were now slipping on some trousers. This was a regular occurrence for me to find this happening but I never questioned what was going on.
"Octavia, we're busy." My father sternly stated with cold eyes. My father and I had a close relationship but whenever he was busy or doing something important, it was like I didn't even exist.
My mother was next to turn and look at me. "Octavia, hunny, why don't you go inside and play with your toys? I'll be in soon."
I frowned at my parents but turned around anyway, trudging back inside with a slumped posture. It was always like this. They never interacted with me; they always made me play by myself. I slammed the back door as I walked in and stomped back upstairs to my room to play.
. . .
Later on in the evening I was still n my room by myself. The only time I saw either of my parents was when they brought me up some food and then they left again. Each time my mum came up it looked as if she had a new mark on her somewhere. I wanted to know what they were from but I didn't want to ask. I knew she wouldn't tell me anyway. After all, I was only seven. I wouldn't understand.
"Sweetie?" A soft voice bounced around my silent room, making my head turn to the door. My mum crept in slowly and closed the door behind her. I dropped my toys on the floor and jumped up on to my bed so that I could sit with her. "Do you want a story before you go to sleep?"
This is why I loved my mother. Even if there was something terrible going on in her life, she would still try and make time for my bedtime story.
"is it the one about the werewolves?" I asked excitedly, clapping my hands. Those were my favourite.
"Shh!" She shushed me, looking at the door as if to check that nobody had heard what I had said. She then turned to me and whispered, "yes it is, sweetie. Now hurry and get your pyjamas on and get in to bed."
"Okay, okay!" I exclaimed quietly and hurriedly got changed in to my pyjamas then scrambled in to bed. I heard mum laughing at me as I tucked myself in to bed and stared up at her waiting for her to start the story.
"Ready?" She asked as she made herself comfortable.
. . .
The story she told me was one of the best Id ever heard, although it was slightly upsetting and I didn't really understand it. What I liked best about them was that she made them up on the spot but they sounded like something you would find in a children's book.
But this one was slightly different...
This one was about two werewolves: a female and a male. Mum said they were called soulmates or mates for short.
The male was an Alpha, mum said that meant he was very powerful, and the female was a Luna, mum said that meant she was very powerful too.
Now the female, the Luna, was madly in love with the Alpha, but the Alpha didn't exactly feel the same way. Mum told me that when they were younger they were inseparable but when their first child came along things started to change.
The Alpha loved his daughter dearly. Olivia, mum told me her name was. I giggled and pointed out that it sounds like my name; but mummy didn't find it very funny.
So she continued the story.
As much as the Alpha loved his daughter, he did find that she got in between him and the Luna, and he didn't like that one bit. He wanted nothing more than to spend all-day-everyday with his Luna but he couldn't do that with Olivia around because the Luna was always with her.
The Alpha had seen other male werewolves getting along with a baby in their family perfectly well and he didn't understand how they done it. Maybe it was because he didn't want a daughter. He wanted a son; a boy who would grow up to be a good, strong leader like his father. The Luna didn't understand why a girl couldn't grow up to be a strong leader like her father. Mummy said she would anyway because she had Alpha's blood in her; whatever that meant.
Mummy then told me that the next part of the story was going to get a bit more serious but I didn't mind because I was enjoying the story so far, even if it was a bit upsetting, and I didn't fully understand what was happening.
Because of how the Alpha felt about the Luna and their daughter Olivia, the Alpha started to get angry with the Luna and began to take it out on her. At first it was just verbally but then that only caused the Luna to spend more time with Olivia because it meant being away from the Alpha. But this only made the Alpha angrier. And so he began taking his anger out on the Luna physically.
The Luna had no idea what she had done wrong. One minute the Alpha adored her, and the next he absolutely hated her. And she couldn't even tell anybody about it because the Alpha had threatened her. Mummy wouldn't tell me what he said; she told me I was too young so I went along with it.
I didn't know it at the time, but that was my mums way of crying for help.
I didn't know it then, but that was the day that my mum told me why my dad abused her.
