Chapter Two

After breckfast, where i was informed i would be teaching three skaters from dogtown how to surf, i decided to meet up with my best friend Mikey, after all, it was the first day of summer break, and i didn't want to waste a day.

"Mikey!" I said, My voice echoing through the phone lines.

"You woke me up Indy" Mikey moaned sleepily.

I held the phone closer to my ear, "I'll meet you at suicide at half past eight?"

"I can't say no to tradition" Mikey said before hanging up.

Suicide is a rock which kids jump off into the lagoon, its a good 20 metres high, and the water hasn't been measured so its not all that safe, but it gives you a good adrenalin rush.

If my dad ever found out i jumped it he would flip out!

I grabbed my skateboard and headed out the door, jumping on the board and criss-crossing down the drive way to get some more speed. I rode a Jay Adams designed Z-Flex skateboard, with a tye-dye pattern on the bottom, it was the best thing to ride and really loose.

I passed through the front gates, which were lined with rows of palm trees and other various shrubs.

The beach ws across the road from my place, but the lagoon was about a kilometre down the road. I went via Mikeys house, not going inside, or even stepping on his land, i simply waited at the bottom of his driveway.

After 2 minutes Mikey arrived, he was wearing a green boardies that made him look 10x more tanned than he already was.

"Mikeyyyy" I said, high-fiving him.

"You'll never guess what" I said, not giving him time to respond to me.

I jumped on my board and continued down the esplanade, Mikey next to me.

I'd known Mikey since i was little, he's a family friend and like my 8th brother.  Like everyone in O'ahu, he's got tanned skin and bleach blonde hair from the ocean. His name is Mike Wright, but he's known by everyone as Mikey.

"You've finally realised you can turn pro and earn $150 000 a year just from surfing?" He questioned, as we zig-zagged our way along the road behind the cars.

"My dads asked me to help coach some kids from Venice, they're skaters who need to learn how to surf!" I said, squeling like a little girl, "You see, i was worried this summer would be the same as every summer, surfing and more surfing, but this time i get to do surfing, and teach surfing"

"Aw man, i wish i had a dad like yours, my summer is going to be boring as hell" He said, overtaking me.

We zoomed through the traffic, not that there was alot, but it gave you an awesome feeling being faster than the cars.

"How come?"

"Dad's got me interning or whatever the fuck that word is, at the surf shop on Kaola Rd. Gonna be stuck indoors most of the time." He said, turning his head every so often to look back at me.

"Oh no, Baby Mikey will loose his tan" I said, fake crying and rubbing my eyes.

"I can literally see the sarcasm oozing out of your eyes Indy" He smiled at me.

"Heres our ride!" I said, pointing to the bus that just got the green light at the traffic lights.

It took him a second to process what i was referring to, and when he did it was too late because i was already gaining speed and almost at the back of the bus, i heard him push off and speed along behind me, i grabbed the bumber bar of the bus, and whipped my head around, Mickey was about a metre behind me so i decided to lend him a hand a pull his arm so he could hold on.

"What are we doing?" Mikey said, half laughing and half yelling because of the noisy bus engine.

"Catching a lift! No harm done" I said, crouching low on my board, i released one hand off the bumber bar, and held my board to steady it out.

After about a minute, Mikey timed us down to when the bus would turn the corner, and we'd let go.

"3... 2... 1... Now!" He said, and the bus turned and we kept going along the esplanade, we were just about there.

I stopped myself by jumping off, kick-flipping my board to land in my hands, and Mikey stopped too. It was the end of the road, and there was just bush, and a trail that lead to the lagoon.

"The turn off is half-way up the trail right?" I questioned, having a mental blank.

"Yeah Inds" He replied, using my nickname, of a nickname, i guess.

We walked for a little while through the dense shrubs, everything was a dark shade of green, like a rainforest. There was a tree that's trunk had been splattered with paint to indicate the way to suicide.

"This way" Mikey said, taking the lead.

He used his board to wack away the spiderwebs from the secret trail.

"Not long now" He said sounding discusted as he wiped a spiderweb off his board onto a fern.

We walked another hundred metres or so, before reaching Suicide.

"We better get this over and done with then." I said, and before Mikey could even reply i stepped back about 10 metres from the edge, and pushed off on my board, riding it along the hard ground, i heard the ground stop, and i knew i was in free-fall. I crouched down a little further into the board, before throwing it out of the way and pencil diving into the water.

I felt the sandy bottom and my feet kicked off, up to the top where i took a gulp of air.

"I cannot believe you just rode your skateboard off a fucking cliff!" Mikey yelled down, before stepping back and taking a leap into the water, landing a few metres next to me, his skateboard in his hands.

"Well, that was fun!" He said, sounding pretty puffed.
