The small family had packed a few belongings and headed out of their state. The trio drove in the worn out van, its tires balding. The journey itself took two days. They stopped at three Bed and breakfast inns along the way and many service stations to full up on gas and other necessities.

Finally they had reached Pembroke Medical Center and had checked in their daughter.
The other two members of the Jennings family resided in a nearby motel. It proved to be an improvement over the last one that Duncan had visited.
They spent every minute of the visiting hours with their daughter, watching, entertaining and consoling her.

The day of surgery was finally upon them. The parents were advised not to be in the room prior to surgery but could view the surgery through a window. Christina declined but the military man stood his ground and watched as the experts sliced opened his eight year old daughter.

The surgery lasted three whole hours. Three painstakingly hours for Duncan but three hours that damned well saved his daughter's life.
When it was all over the surgeon gave the child another anathesia dose which induced her for a further two hours. During these two hours no one was allowed in the room, no one except for her parents.

They sat in the room stagnant of disinfectant, holding holds, waiting for their daughter to wake up. Christina wept when she saw her daughter, the stitches covering her entire body. Usually Duncan would refuse to shed any tears but this time he wept along side his wife.

The father guilt rode him and almost caused him to dispel his secrets with his wife. He was about to do so when a doctor rushed into the room, clipboard in hand.

He was an older man for Duncan with a receding hair line and graying temples. He glanced at the monitor displaying the life condition of Jayda and scribbled on the clipboard.

"Your daughter's heart rate is normal but it will increase significantly when she wakes up. Her mind and body will be in immense pain so it will be good for her to see a familiar face when she wakes up. Also her motor functions will be unavailable to her since she will feel a lot of pain when moving. A nurse will be inside every four hours to turn her. We are going o have to keep her here for at least two more weeks." The good doctor rambled on some more to the parents before leaving the room.

Shortly after Duncan whispered to his wife that he was going to go back to the motel to rest for a bit. Kissing her on her cheek, he took one last look on his daughter and left the room.
