PART ONE: THE MUSIC

John Watson was 10 years old when his mother died.

""Little Lotte let her mind wander. Little Lotte thought, "am I fonder of dolls or of goblins or of shoes? Or of riddles? Or of frocks? Or of chocolates?""

It had been 11 years since she died, but John could still hear his mother's soft, calm voice reciting the poem she loved so much.

"No. "What I love best," Lotte said. "Is when I'm asleep in my bed, and the Angel of Music sings songs in my head. The Angel of Music sings songs in my head...""

"The Angel of Music sings songs in my head," John whispered to himself, gazing out the window. He stood and walked to his tiny bathroom. Sighing, John splashed a little cold water on his face in the hopes of relieving his drowsiness. He looked at his face in the mirror. Dark circles hung below his eyes and the whites around his irises were slightly bloodshot. It was fairly obvious that he hadn't sleep in two days. As he was studying his face, he thought he saw a shadow flickering in the corner of the mirror, like someone was there inside. John shook his head, grumbling something about an exhaustion hallucination.

John stumbled back to his room. "Mondays can go to hell," he sighed as he pulled on his scrubs. John was the head surgeon's assistant. He was mostly happy with his job, except on Mondays, when he had to wake up at 3 AM just to get to work on time.

And then there was music.

John silenced, listening to where the melodic line was coming from. He walked into his small living room.
I think it's coming from outside. Under my window, he thought to himself. Staying hidden behind his curtains, John peeked out the glass to the sidewalk below.

He saw no one. It wasn't until John's second alarm, the one telling him he had to leave for work, went off that he realized the music has stopped just as he gazed down to the source.

Whoever had been playing the violin had disappeared.
