"When you turn sixteen you can have a camera."
"But mum! I love photography! I'm responsible enough to have my own camera! I'll buy it myself!"
"Not until you're sixteen! End of discussion Lila! Now go to your room." She said through gritted teeth and turned back to do the dishes.
I grunted and pounded my foot against the floor. I stomped my way out of the kitchen, down the hall and into my room. I slammed my door shut and laid face down on my bed.
What does she mean I'm not responsible enough? I'm fourteen years old... I can take care of myself. I basically have been for the past four years...
Ever since dad died, she's been so strict. I'm not allowed to go anywhere by myself. I have to stay within a ten mile radius of my house. She has to know where I'm going, what I'm doing and who is going with me. I'm not allowed to go anywhere in the car without my mum...
Dad was hit by a drunk driver. He lost control and drove his car into a canal... They couldn't get it out in time. He drowned in his car.
I really miss him being around. The way we used to go out for ice cream. How we used to sing together in his pickup.
The memories took me back... If he was here he'd let me get a camera. He understood me. He was my best friend...
I got up and picked up my phone. I quickly dialed my best friend, Tate. After a couple of rings he picks up.
"Hey girl what's up?" He answers.
"Hey Tate..." I say and lay down.
"What's wrong?"
"My mum still says I can't get a camera..."
"What?! How are we going to go on that photography trip?"
"We're not unless I can get a camera in a month... Trust me... That's not going to happen."
"Oh well that stinks. I hope you feel better."
"Thanks Tate... I'll work on it. I wouldn't miss that trip for the world."
"Talk to you later." He says.
"Later." I reply and hang up.
Time for plan B.
