The rumble of thunder grew louder, the frightening crash of lighting lit up the sky as rain pounded heavily against the roof. A soft whine sounded to the left of the small room, a small figure stood in the white doorway, it slowly moved across the room with the soft patter of small feet closer to the bed to the far left of the room blanketed with turquoise and white comforters.

Courtney lifted her body sleepily propping herself on her elbow peering sleepily to the small figure her eyes half closed, lighting lit up the room making the figure leap with fear, Courtney sat up and reached over the bed and flicked on the lamp. There stood a small boy, about 9 or 10, Courtney reached out pulling him into a close embrace her hands combing through his tangled ginger hair the soft crying made her hold him tighter as her shoulder became wet with Joseph's tears. He had been scared of storms since a long friend of his had been killed during a bad lighting storm, a tree branch their neglectful neighbor refused to cut down had fallen through their ceiling crushing his dear friend.

"Joey don't cry, It's in the past." she whispered softly into his ear, taking each of his shoulder's in each hand gazing deeply into his eyes. "I would never let anything happen to you"

"You can't stop nature Court." He replied.

"I know but that won't stop me from keeping you safe, Kiddo" she promised.

She lifted her thick comforters and allowed him to climb in, she gave him one last hug before rolling over putting her back to him, the warm heat pulsing from his body lulling her to sleep. A loud snap sounded outside, she opened her eyes and sat up to see a bolt flash of lighting flash across the sky striking the large tree that held their tree-house, a large plank flew through the air crashing through the window shattering with ease. The shards of glass flew everywhere, Courtney covered Joey's head just as a large shard lodged into his leg, the turquoise color of the comortter darkening to red.

Joseph shrieked and clenched his teeth, his hand instinctively lowering to the large shard lodged in his thigh. Courtney quickly jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom grabbing a brown bottle  of peroxcide and a small plastic first-aid kit, she ran back to the room flicking the light switch up, further lighting the room revealing the severity of his wound. She winced in horrer before bolting to his side gripping his hand her eyes locked on his shut lids as he cried in pain.

"Joey listen to me!, Bite down as hard as you can. This is going to sting" she hollered over the roaring of the thunder outside the floor quickly becoming slippery with water, She put on a rubber glove they had normaly used for cleaning and shoved the comforter into his jaws before taking the massive shard in her hand and yanking it out. Joey shreiked through the comforter hot tears streamed at a steady pace from his eyes, Courtney unscrewed the cap from the brown bottle and poured it out onto his leg it quickly going up in bubbles as it cleared out any possible bacteria. She wiped the rest away collecting a few gauze draping it over his leg. Joey, not one who was excited about pain cried deeply and held his thigh veins popping from his neck. The bubbles the peroxide made turned red as she wiped it away. She'd dealt with small glass cuts before but this was far beyond her abilities.
