She tore through the street like a bullet. Too close. She thought as she rounded the corner of the dark alleyway.

Tucking herself behind the wall of a ransacked grocery store she pulled out the items that almost cost her life.

The food that she managed to grab would feed her for about two, maybe three weeks if rationed. The granola bars and plastic wrapped food rustled around in her no longer empty backpack as she pulled out a hunting knife. She had managed to rip off the knife along with a packet of matches from a boy in the group. One who looked close to homicidal at her unwelcomed appearance. The handle was a soft worn in leather that curved around the wickedly sharp point of the metal hunting knife. She slipped on the cover over the knife and stowed it away in her beat up purple backpack.

She had recognized one of the boys in the group, he had gone to her high school. They had been in Chemistry together, until the schools had been shut down. Not that it mattered. Nothing that happened before the disaster mattered. She knew that what she had done could have cost the life of the boy who was "guarding" the campsite but she also knew that she had done what she needed to do to survive the following weeks.

It no longer mattered who she screwed over. She was now alone because she had tried to preserve kindness in her heart. But it died when he died.

She could still hear the infuriated shouts of the group she had just robbed. No doubt they would kill her instantly if she was dumb enough to ever be spotted near their campsite again.

Knowing they had begun to search for her, she tucked away her belongings from her camp into her backpack quickly and silently in the dark.

With her backpack secure and her eyes focused on the open street ahead of her, she crouched down and carefully inspected the quiet street. She could hear two boys a couple streets down arguing loudly.

With careful and quiet feet she sped down the street concealed in the shadows with her hood drawn over brown hair. Her green eyes nervously shifting from left to right as she reached an intersection.

A loud crash echoed behind her just as she had just begun to run across the intersection. Fear bit into her and she turned her head to the noise. It was the boy who had been in her class, hid eyes so furious they seemed to glow from where he stood. He must have spotted her and tried to get a jump on her. He was clearly clumsy and uncoordinated. The noise had come from a garbage can he had knocked over in his careless attempt to attack her.

She then spotted another member of the group coming down the street from where she was standing. Fantastic, I'm going to die. She thought to herself before her eyes focused beyond a cluster of trees where a house with an open window was barely visible from where she was standing. That works. She thought, her plan already forming in her mind.

She sprang into action and before the other kid coming down the street noticed her. She bolted forward, sweeping her leg under his knees to make sure he hit the ground. He was knocked over easily, his head bouncing againt the concrete so loudly she winced. Whoops, sorry. She left the boy on the ground and sprinted through the trees and carefully yet quickly inspected the house from outside.

She could hear more voices now, angrier and louder by the second. They must have spotted the boy on the ground.

With a glance through the tees she spotted them. Without a second thought she pulled herself through the window and into the seemingly abandoned house.

She turned and shut the window. The room was dark and dusty. She slipped to the ground and sighed.

No faster than it took for her muscles to relaxed, an arm snaked around her neck pressing her against the body behind her as a sharp metal object pressed against her abdomen. "What do you think you're doing?"
