Her scream stuck in her throat as the sharp blade dug into her painfully. "Let me go." She spat out through gritted teeth.

"I'm won't ask you nicely again. What are you doing here?" The gruff voice growled close to her ear.

There were loud curses outside. An angry scream ripped through the night. The boy behind her whipped his head toward the noise. Down the road, the group that was trying to track her was visible through the window, their angry faces barely visible in the night.

She stiffened against him. Her body shifted and curled away from the group outside.

The knife slipped to her side and pressed down harder against her skin. She felt a warm liquid run down her and seep into her shirt.

"What did you do? Tell me now or I will kill you." The boy growled.

Just then, the door to the bedroom swung open and a young boy her age walked in, candle in hand. At seeing the young battered girl in the hands of his brother, the boy's mouth popped open, the lollipop that rested in his mouth smacked against the floor. His dark hair, curled at the edges, bobbed around him as his head shot from the window to the girl to his brothers expression.

"James! What do you think you're doing?" The boy at her back, James, shifted his body away from the girls back and looked at his brother. "Lee I don't know where this girl came from or what she did but there's group of boys outside hunting her down. I'll take care of this. Go back to Lidia."

Lee came closer to the girl, stopped two feet away and kneeled in front of her. He examined her face, his body stiff, his eyes untrusting. From her bruised, sunken in cheekbones to her frail arms and legs, he just looked at her. Lee's face softened as he took in her guarded expression, the fear clearly laced into her eyes.

"James you idiot" Lee said shooting an annoyed look towards his brother. "Look at her you moron. She's rail thin, what do you think she did to them?"

"She could have killed someone Lee. You don't know what people are capable of these days."

The girl started to speak but stopped suddenly, anger creasing the lines of her face. "Can you not stab me? That would be really great." The pressure of the knife was lifted off with the shocked and angry look Lee shot at James. She twisted, still trapped in the arms of James.

"I didn't kill anyone you idiot. This whole area is a shit show I was trying to not die before I moved on to the next city. I didn't have any food or any supplies and every store has been looted. I didn't have a choice."

She could see the change in Lee's stance but James still didn't waver. He pushed the tip of the knife into her again as he grabbed her backpack and ripped it off. It was tossed to Lee and the contents were spilled onto the wooden floors. There goes my survival. She thought angrily as Lee and James looked through her things.

Her bag held the food she had stolen, along with the hunting knife. Lee lifted the knife in his hands, his expression a question.

"I stole that just now." She said hoping that they would at least leave her with the means of defending herself. "I haven't killed anyone. Just let me go. All I wanted was to get away from those boys. They would have killed me otherwise."

James hands swept over her body feeling her. He pressed his arms up and down her legs and back and up her torso. "What do you think you are doing?" She growled, fury rolling off of her in waves. Did I just get felt up? She thought infuriated.

"Calm down princess, I was just making sure you didn't try to kill me or my brother here with any hidden weapons."

He let her slip out of his grasp. She scooted away from both boys and eyed her belongings with annoyance. "Can I get those back or...?"

"You'll get them back when you prove that you're not gonna hurt us or rob us" Lee said, his eyes searching hers.

"Why? I'm not going to stay long enough to." She said roughly, avoiding his eyes and looking into James's angry ones.

"Well I'm offering you a place to crash and some actual food, none of that packaged crap. You can stay tonight if you want. You can also keep all your things."

"Why would you do that?" She asked, confused.

"You don't look like you could keep going the way you are. When was the last time you slept?" Lee said reguarding the deep dark circles under her eyes that contrasted her pale skin.

James looked between them, frustrated at his trusting brother. He knew that if she was to stay the night here he would have to be the one to make sure she didn't slit their throats in the middle of the night.

The girl sensed the annoyance between the brothers but decided to trust the boy with the curly hair. His warm brown eyes looked honest. Maybe even kind enough to not let the blonde kill her without reason. Plus he was right, she couldn't remember the last time she slept at all. She could also use with food that was made to nourish the body instead of fatten it.

She nodded at the boy then, her guard falling only slightly.

"James, can you go get her some of the dinner we made today?" Lee asked his brother kindly.

"I'm not leaving her here. I don't trust thieves." He grumbled looking at his brother with an angry expression.

"Okay then I'll go. But play nice" Lee said, looking pointedly at James. He looked toward the girl. "I'll be back in two minutes." He turned and disappeared through a dark hallway leaving her alone with James.
