     For Love

By Rachel Colbert

Darkness surrounds me like a cloud,

you come like a sun

     willing me to be warmed

by your heavenly rays.

     Hard hearted I stood

locking myself in,

but you did not give up

merely found the key.

     Silently I ran from you,

you followed,

your foot steady on the ground

and close behind me.

I raised my wings and flew,

you watched as I disappeared

     unable to follow,

with no wings of your own.

     My gaze rested upon you,

observing from afar,

     a safe distance

for me.

     You go to lengths unimaginable

just to reach me

     what is so appealing

that you do this for me?

I lose my wings and land

as I hold out my hand,

I am inexorably drawn to you

I wish now to understand

     You take my hand,

your touch is soft and warm,

     so different from

the cold I have known

     “The lengths I go to,

my love, are for my love of

you.”
