My insides felt like they were on fire, every single nerve in my body seemed to be alight. I ran my fingertips through his hair to make sure he was still there. The tiny threads ran through my fingers so faintly that it made my stomach turn at the thought of not seeing him for another hurt filled year. The small boy shifted in y arms, his sandy blonde hair falling in front of his closed eyes. I pressed a kiss to his warm forehead and let sleep take over me, knowing that when I wake tomorrow, he would be gone.
Upon waking, I hid my disappointment with a heavy layer of makeup and a thick line of eyeliner. I was the disappointment of the family because I was the only one who was home with my son and brother that night three years ago. I fought with my hair to at least accomplish a messy bun and when I did I was quick to restrain it. I made my way into the oversized kitchen that my parents just insisted on having in their mansion of a house. My mother was perched on a stole, a mug of coffee on one hand and a book in the other. Her brown and blonde curls were knotted at the nape of her neck and her black framed glasses were balancing on the bridge of her nose. She didn't even look up when I dropped a coffee mug to the floor, causing it to shatter on contact with the tiles.
"Clean it up," was all she said in the most flat tone she could muster. She'd never been able to support me through any of this. " Get over it, Memphis."
"He would have been five today, you bitch!" I snapped, bursting into tears. She raised her eyes to me.
"You deserve everything you were dealt, dear."
I grabbed the closest thing to me and threw it at her, praying that it would hit her right between the eyes. All I heard was her screaming after me to grow up and get over it. I hugged my arms closer to me, trying to hold myself together as I stumbled down the road.
