~Swimming Against the Current~
~Chapter 7: Secrets Revealed~
~Cassie’s POV~
I kept my head underwater as I sensed Eli getting closer to me. I plunged deeper into the water, deep enough, so that he might not see me. I looked up and saw his face peer over the water. I suddenly felt the urge to swim to the surface, to meet him halfway.
I slowly made my way to the top. My face slowly edged out of the water until my whole head was out. He backed away. I knew this was going to happen.
“No, don’t be scared! Please?” I begged. He looked at me, obviously freaked out.
“You’re a mermaid?” he said, sounding just as freaked out as he looked.
“Yes? But you’re not a human either, are you?” it sounded more like a statement then a question. I looked at him, eyes wide still freaked about him finding out my secret this early.
“H-how did you know?” he asked. Who ever knew a guy could be such a gimp?
“I… um… I guess I just kind of sensed it?” I was sort of asking myself if I even believed it. His eyebrows rose.
“Well, I guess you’ll probably want to know what I am, right?” Eli said, now with more confidence. I nodded. He took a deep breath and then there was a swirl of magic surrounding him. His clothes dropped to the ground. The next thing I knew a HUGE wolf was standing in front of me. I gasped and ducked behind the water weeds instantly. The wolf took a cautious step back.
“Eli…” I trailed off in a whisper. Eli slowly walked towards me and bowed his head. I reached out and stroked him. The tingles shot up my arm again, except this time, I didn’t pull away. We stood like this for several minutes, two creatures that I didn’t believe in just two days ago.
He eventually pulled back and I let go reluctantly. He grabbed his clothes between his teeth and trotted over behind and came back out human, and fully dressed. I hopped out of the water and dried myself off, although my shirt was drenched and clung to my body. My tail turned to legs. Eli walked over and offered his hand to me; I took it, willingly. I wobbled slightly and he caught me. He held me making sure I didn’t fall as we made our way back to his truck. He put his hands by my waist, hovering slightly before I pushed them to my skin. He didn’t pull me closer, he just looked at me.
“I won’t tell, if you won’t tell,” I finally said. The corners of his mouth pulled upward and he shook his head.
“I would never tell, even if you did,” Eli said. I opened my mouth to say something, but no words came out. I closed my mouth and smiled. He leaned forward and tilted his head.
“Is this okay?” he asked in a voice barely above a whisper.
“Yes,” I replied. He leaned forward and kissed me, hesitant at first. I hugged my arms around his shoulders, pulling him closer. The kiss was magical.
~Eli’s POV~
I tightened my arms around her waist, our bodies pressed together. Cassie pulled her head back and smiled. She had a beautiful smile.
“I got your shirt all wet,” she said.
“Huh, I didn’t notice,” I replied. She laid her head down on my shoulder and I held her. I whispered in her ear, “We should go.”
We pulled away from each other but I held onto her hand, leading her to the passenger’s side. She got in and I walked quickly over to the driver’s side. I started the car and let the engine run for a few minutes. I reached over and held Cassie’s hand. I felt her flinch.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. She looked over at me, confused.
“Nothing, why?” she answered. I reached up and touch her face and she flinched again.
“You don’t like it when I touch you,” I stated, looking down. “Did you like it when I kissed you?” Cassie grabbed my hand and I looked up.
“I do like it when you touch me, especially when you kiss me! It’s just… when you touch me, I feel these little tingles. You probably think I’m crazy,” Cassie said.
“No, I don’t think you’re crazy. It’s normal to feel the tingles! It just proves that I’m destined to-” I broke off, realizing what I was about to say.
“You’re destined to… what?” she asked. Of course she asked.
“You’re probably going to want to wait,” I requested.
“Wait for what?”
“Wait to learn about what we’re destined for.”
“We’re? I want to know,” she demanded. I sighed.
“Okay. So, werewolves have to… um… reproduce to keep the kind going. So we have what we call, mates,” I started.
“And… What are ‘mates?’” she questioned.
“Mates are kind of hard to explain. They’re kind of like ‘love at first sight.’ Except it hurts when you’re not with them for a long period of time or far away from them,” I explained.
“So, why are you telling me this?” she asked.
“Cassie, you’re my mate,” I told her. She just looked at me with no expression, except she wasn’t looking at me. She was looking at something beyond me that only existed in her mind. “Cassie?”
“So, we have to… reproduce? Now?” Cassie asked coming back down to Earth.
“No! No, we can wait. But there is one more thing to make the mating process complete,” I said.
“What?” she asked.
“I guess you’ll find out,” I said and pulled out onto the highway.
