The sound of an eagle’s caw woke me up. I reached for my bow and armed it with a sharp arrow from the quiver that hung from my back. I know that caw, a call of distress from the eagle I knew well since the age of time; my best friend Aegis.

I aimed for an unknown shadow beyond the trees. He was a mile away, but a snap from a twig gave his position. He’s almost here, I could feel it. He was slow, almost snail-like.

Closer he comes, ever so gently. I stretched the bow. It was only seconds before he’d emerge. Slowly… slowly… and there!

“Don’t shoot!” He said, hands in the air, just as I was about to let go.

“Master Caius, please say that before you come at shooting range.” I said, putting on my glasses. “I almost killed you!” I chuckled. I actually didn’t see anything funny, considering that I almost killed my one and only family. I was just glad I didn’t shoot.

“I am terribly sorry, my prince. I thought perhaps you were asleep.”

“I was, until Aegis…” I trailed off. Aegis is a very well trained bird. I don’t want to boast or anything, but I trained him myself! He couldn’t have mistaken Master Caius as an enemy. Unless…

I turned around, looking up and down the trees.

“What is the matter?” Master Caius’ long point ears twitched. I stopped spinning and heard the leaves rustle. How could leaves rustle without wind? Easy.

“Nemesis” He muttered.

“Ooh, for an old guy, you have amazing hearing,” A smiling voice echoed from an unknown origin, emphasizing “amazing” in her whiney way. How’d Isis find me?! “at least better than little weakling Prince!”

“Show yourself, Nemesis!” He shouted, his eyes shrouded with a white veil. He had developed his senses by using this white veil, which only great magicians can master. Unfortunately for me, I am not one of them.

“Ah-ah-ah,” She said, in her painfully happy voice, “you’ve got to look for us first! Besides, it was Prince’s fault, skipping school like he did! You make it harder for us to track you, you little brat!” Disgust reverberated through her voice. Thanks to that, and her nonsensical blabbing, I was able to pinpoint her exact location.

I armed the bow, pulled and fired. A sound of static filled the air. A faint light flashed and a loud boom followed. I missed.

A playful laugh echoed through the tiny clearing. It came from every direction possible. Master Caius had unveiled his eyes. He now lay on the ground, shaking. His hands covered his ears. I don’t blame him. He was weak from protecting me – from protecting the village – from Nemesis. It would only be right for him to show pain and disgust from Isis’ irritating laugh.
