Chapter 2

I was wrapped in the blankets of my bed, staring at the wall. Sunshine casted the room in a bright glow, and I could hear people downstairs but yet, I still laid in bed. I wasn’t looking forward to confronting Matt after last night. We fought occasionally, and I knew he was only mad because he was protecting me but I was still upset. I snuggled into the comforts of the covers, satisfied with the sleep I got last night. There was a soft knock at my door and I knew who it was. He entered right after the knock and hesitated in the door. I sat up and patted next to me, a smile betraying my lips. Matt smiled widely and sat next to me, leaning back onto my pillows. I also leant back and curled up next to him, and his arm wrapped around me tightly.

“I’m sorry Kelsey. Just the way that guy was looking at you… It bothered me. I wanted to-” He started to apologize but I cut him off.

“I know Matty, but I can take care of myself,” I butted in.

“I know you can, I taught you how to take care of stupid boys,” He grins, ruffling my hair. I squeal and try to move away from him but he holds me there tightly. After a couple of minutes, I quit struggling and let out a loud huff of air. Matt laughs and lets me go. I jump off my bed and run my fingers through my now tangled hair, glaring at him.

“C’mon, breakfast is ready,” Matt tells me, and leaves my room. I finish fixing my hair and end up throwing it in a loose ponytail. I leave my room and head downstairs, taking in the delicious smell of bacon and eggs.

“Smells great!” I chirp, smiling at my mom as I enter the kitchen. She thanks me and I head over to the little toddler, giving him a little hug before I take my seat next to him.

“Morning Kelsey,” Jesse mumbles through a mouthful of food. I roll my eyes at him.

“Morning,” I reply, putting eggs and bacon on my own plate. Matt sets a glass of orange juice in front of me and I smile at him gratefully. Soon, everyone is sitting at the table, food in front of them. I take a bite of my eggs and I’m struck with mixed feelings. The taste is so familiar to me yet so foreign. It felt like it was yesterday that all of us sat around a small table and ate my moms eggs. Well given that, that memory was over four years ago. It was a non-important memory but when something tragic like your mom leaving, every little memory is a treasure hidden in the sand. It took place back in our small apartment, we were all pretty young at the time, high school was something that was too far away to feel nervous about. Jesse was with us, it was after another one of his big fights with his parents and mom and dad said he could stay with us for the week. We were about to go to school and were running late but mom insisted that we all sit down and eat breakfast. Mom was pregnant and always insisted on doing family things. It was a good time.

“So how has everyone been?” My mom spoke, breaking the silence. She was looking around at us expectantly, and I worried that no one would speak. It was a simple question, nothing too inquisitive so I took a deep breath.

“I’ve been good. Freshman year wasn’t all that bad. I met new people and it was a fun year,” I replied, smiling softly.
