I sat alone on my block outside the cafeteria everyday since I came to this school. I read books and ate my lunch during break. People ignore me and I ignore them back. Everyday was normal for me: Wake up, go to school, go home, do my work, and go to sleep.
Today was different. My school was on lockdown. A sophomore brought a gun to school and was firing away at students. He's Easton Cross, a boy in my grade. I've never talked to him, but I never to talk to anyone because I'm shy and I always meet the wrong people. Teachers were pulling students in classrooms.
I, of course was locked out in a empty hallway. I knew Easton was close, and I knew nothing could save me now. I sat on the hallway floor with my back pressed against the lockers behind me. I heard footsteps and I looked up meeting Easton's angry eyes.
"Who are you?" he spat at me.
"Berri Ringer." I say softly.
"I haven't met you or seen you around before. What grade are you in?" He asked.
"I know. I don't speak to anyone... I looked at him...usually. I'm in 10th the same as you." I explained to him.
"Why don't you speak to anyone?" He asked his tone gentler, but still full of rage.
"People are rude, and I'm shy." I said. He lowered his gun a bit.
"I know what you mean." He said with knowing eyes.
"Why?" I asked him. His eyes regained their rage, and he shouted at me "You don't understand! "
"I understand your heart screams for revenge against those who bullied you. That you hate anyone who has bullied you and you want those dead. You want them to feel what you felt.. dead inside." I said staring directly at him in the eye."How...how did you know?" He asked in wonder.
"I know because of your actions. Killing wasn't the answer, Easton. Sure, bullying is horrible and shouldn't even be real. I wish it was kust in books and movies, and not in real life. It hurts people like you and a bunch of other people." I said trying to get through to him.
"I...I know your right, but I've killed people already, Berri." He said after a couple of minutes.
"They didn't deserve death, Easton. Death is never the answer. You can't play God." I said staring at Jacob Riggs dead body. Easton followed my stare, and kneeled down in front of Jacob's body.
"What are you doing?" I asked confused by his action.
"I can't play God, but I can pray to Him. I'm realizing now I've just ruined 2 families." He confessed with tears in his eyes. I kneeled down next to him, and we prayed together for Jacob Riggs & Jason Green.
"I'm turning myself in. Its the right thing to do. I'm a monster." Easton said after we prayed.
"You're not a monster. Yes you killed, but monsters don't pray. Monsters are heartless, and you have a heart Easton." I said.
"Thanks Berri." He said smiling. He dropped his gun to the floor, and extended his hand. I shook his hand smiling.
"Will you...will you be my friend?" He asked hesitantly. I smiled, & shook my head yes.
"I'll visit you in jail." I promised. He smiled & said thanks. Easton looked up at the ceiling and pointed at a camera.
"Well at least everything is recorded so we don't have to repeat ourselves." Easton said.
I nodded unable with words. I extended my hand to his and nodded to the exit."Its time." I whispered. He took my hand, and nodded. We walked to the doors, & before opening them Easton & I hugged. It felt great to have a friend.
We opened the doors, & Easton let go of my hand, and put his hands up. Several police officers tackled him, and he was put in a police car to be taken away.A police officer walked up to me, and asked me where everyone else was, how many dead, & why I opened the doors with the killer.
"Two dead, hiding or in classrooms, and I was left out from hiding so we started talking." I told the officer that everything was recorded on a camera in the school.
The police officer nodded and told me to go home. I walked home thinking everything that happen today. In a way I was a hero because if I didn't get through to Easton more students and staff would have been dead.
A couple months passed, and I was known as the girl friends with a murderer. I didn't care though, Easton is my friend. I made friends with another girl in my grade named Sirra who is really nice and accepting. I kept my promise to Easton who is now serving 20 years in prison, & visited him every once in awhile with Sirra sometimes. Bullying is wrong, but playing God is never right.
Umm ok so I had this weird dream where I was Berri & I woke up at like 3am & wrote my dream down, & edited it later the next day :D my dreams are very odd because I'm rarely me. Originally dreamt & wrote on August 20 & 21 2013 :) Dedicated to all I follow on here :)
