"Peace, a horrifying notion,
A grotesque perverted idea,
A heinous insight,
Into the fairytale like dream that we believe.

Where is peace?
What is peace?
How can one achieve peace?
How can one get a taste?

I have never known peace,
Never felt it,
Never emanated it,
Never liked it.

I have never known peace,
For I do not know what it is to begin with,
Is it the notion of safety?
Then sorry, I have never felt safe.

I have never felt peace,
For the awkward handshakes and plastic smiles,
Have never once done much to protect me,
And neither my entire humanity.

I have never emanated peace,
For if one is to give something,
There should be an equivalent exchange,
But I feel no peace returned from cold smiling eyes.

I have never liked peace,
Not to rave at normal passerby's,
But due to the fact that it's funny to think of peace,
When the council of war has the whole world smiling,
At each other with open barb wired arms."

- Private Timothy George Atkins,
Royal Air Force, 1939
