My heart beats without control as I take my steps into the large new school I'm about to be in. Montana is completely new to me- I only moved about a week ago. My mother waves goodbye to me and I pretend not to see her as I quickly grasp the handle of the door and open it, letting myself inside. Teenagers are everywhere, and they're all looking at me.
"Is that the new kid?" a girl asks as I walk past her to my new locker. I act like I didn't hear her.
"Hi, my name's Elizabeth!" says this girl with an extremely high-pitched, screechy voice. I smile warmly at her.
"My name's Ashley." Although her voice bothers the living hell out of me, I'm just going to keep on because who knows? She could end up being my best friend! I walk into my first class and sit in the front row next to Elizabeth, when the teacher comes to the front.
"Hello, I am Mrs. Jaclyn your chemistry teacher!" She talks for a while and makes us all laugh before she makes us do the "name game." Basically, she makes us all get in a circle and say our name and our favorite color. I look around the circle and immediately stop when I see him. He's absolutely gorgeous- tan skin, light brown eyes, brown hair... but what's his name?
"Okay, let's start with you," the teacher points at me, "and we'll end with Myles."
"Okay, my name is Ashley and my favorite color is red." I look up to see that boy looking at me then whispering to some kid next to him.
"My name's Charlotte and my favorite color is black." the girl next to me says. I'm shocked, she doesn't look like the kind of girl who would like the color black. She has bright blue eyes with large frames and long bleach-blonde hair. The circle continues before it gets to him.
"My name is Henry," he starts, "and my favorite color is red." I smile internally.
The bell rings and I go to my next class, Geometry. I sit down in the back, knowing I'm the only one in this class for my age. I'm supposed to be in Algebra, but apparently I'm advanced so I'm here in the class above. Just when I think I'm all alone, Henry walks in. He looks around for a seat when he sees the only one left is next to me. He walks over and sets his books down before sitting down. I keep my stare straight ahead.
"Hi, what's your name? I'm Henry." he says in a 'my voice hasn't hit puberty' tone. I laugh internally, his voice will change soon.
"I'm Ashley."
"So where are you from?" he asks me, his light brown eyes gazing deep into my brown eyes.
"Arizona." he laughs slightly.
"So I guess you aren't going to be used to our winters here, are you?" I shake my head.
"Not at all."
"Could everyone shut up please?" the teacher says as she bursts into the room.
"I'm Mrs. Teur, your new geometry teacher, Fun fact about me, I don't like talking. So please don't talk during my class." Henry looks and me and smirks slightly, obviously trying to hold back a laugh. I do my best to hold my laugh back too. "Go around and say your names and whatever the hell you want to say." she shouts as we all get into a circle.
"My name is Henry, and I play the violin," he says.
"The names William, and I think Henry is the ugliest guy in his grade."
Everyone laughs except Henry and I, Henry looking down at the table. What the actual hell? I mean, I think he's attractive!
"My name's Ashley, and I think William should shut up and shove a fork up his ass." Everyone laughs, even Mrs. Teur, and especially Henry. The bell rings and apparently it's lunch time even though it's so early. I get in line to buy something then I turn around to find a spot but nothing is available. My heart pounds as I look around. What am I going to do?
"Hi, my name is Tori, do you want to come sit with us?" this girl asks me. I nod thankfully and follow her over to a spot where I see Charlotte and some others.
"This is Ashley everyone," Tori announces. I meet two other people, Peyton and Cassy. They all seem so nice, I wonder if they know Henry. We talk for a while before it's free period, so most of them apparently go to a nearby park to just mess around. I follow Peyton and Cassy to the park, seeing Henry walking just before us. The two of them kept talking and completely left me out of the conversation, but I suppose that's alright. I mean, I am the new kid.
Cassy turns around to look at me. "Oh yeah, that kid in front of us is Henry, he's hilarious."
"Do you like him?" I blurt out. She looks repulsed.
"No! No one would ever like him like that, he's like my little brother."
"Except for April..." Peyton says.
"April?"
"Yeah, April is freaking obsessed with him. Don't have a clue why though." I act like I'm not on a jealous rage when I say,
"Does he like her?"
"Oh my gosh, no! He thinks of her as a friend. He likes this other girl, Jamie, like full on. Well at least he did last year, but she couldn't care less."
"Oh." I say, trying not to think of this Jamie girl.
"Holy shit! Look at Jack!" a kid named Myles says next to me. I look up at this blonde kid standing on top of a light post.
"What the hell..." I mutter. What is wrong with this school?
The rest of the day goes by and I didn't get to talk to Henry further, unfortunately. Although I made new friends, I'm still missing my old ones. Annelise would understand how I'm feeling, she's my best friend.
