Ch.6 Trouble

"He called you?"Jenny asked. After a good night's rest in the comforting protective embrace of Marc, Megan had called her best friend to inform her about the latest. "Maybe it's a good thing you'll be staying in L.A. longer than you originally thought. But how does he keep finding your number?"

"I don't know," Megan sighed as she flopped back into the pillows. "You're sure that you haven't given out my number to anyone?"

"No- after the last time, I learned my lesson." She went quiet for a moment. "What did you tell Lowe when he asked why you changed number?"

"Told him that someone's hacked into my phone service and was jacking up my monthly bill so I had to change providers. He didn't ask anything more on the subject," she replied. "Can we please change this subject now? I just want to forget about last night."

"Alright... Then tell me about this guy you met," Jenny teased.

Megan was shocked. "Wha- What are you talking about? What guy?" she tried to evade the question.

"Please- I know that something is going on over there. The last time we talked, you sounded like some love-sick school girl which you never really sound like, so I know there has to be a guy involved to get you like this," Jenny insisted. "Now tell me! Who is he- what's he like? Where did you meet him? Have you kissed yet? Details!"

Megan twirled the cord of the phone around her finger. What could she say? 'He's a ghost I metthat's haunting my room?' Straight jacket for one, please! "Well...His name's Marc and he's another guest at the hotel," she began. "It was a chance kind of meeting, you know?"

"Is he good looking?"

"Extremely,"Megan answered before she could stop herself. It wasn't a lie- he was good looking.

"Aha! I knew it- you've got a crush!" Jenny cheered on the other end.

Megan frowned at the truth of it all- she did have a crush on Marc. "What does it matter? When the case is wrapped up, I'll be coming back to New York. He's got a life here."'If you can call haunting the hallways of a crumbling hotel a life,' she thought. "What would I do? Fly out every weekend to visit him? No, it's better that I just keep him at arm's length in the friend zone. That way, no one gets hurt."

"And that's where you're wrong- you'll be hurt, I can tell just by the way you're talking right now," Jenny insisted. "And what if he feels the same way about you? Pushing him away will hurt him too."

"I've got to go- I'll talk to you later, Jen," Megan said and ignoring her friend's protests, she hung up in her ear. Picking the phone back up, she dialed the front desk. "Yes, this is Megan Stones in room 49. Can you please put a 'do not disturb' on this line for the time being?" The receptionist answered "yes." "Thank you," she said before hanging up again. It was bitchy, yes, but she knew that if she didn't do it, Jenny wouldn't stop calling. Grabbing her cell phone, she sent a quick text to John saying she wasn't feeling well and couldn't come in today. After that, she buried herself under the blankets and sulked.

Megan woke up a little while later to someone lightly shaking her foot. Pulling the covers down a little, she saw Marc sitting on the edge of the bed, a small yet worried smile on his handsome face. "I must say, I wasn't expecting you to be back so soon," he commented.

"That's because..." Megan yawned as she sat up in the bed. "I didn't go," she stated.

"Everything alright?" Marc asked, reaching out to take her hand. Megan knew she should have backed away, not give him any ideas if Jenny was right and he did like her the way she did him, but she just couldn't bring herself to. Not when it was his presence that made her feel so at ease.
