She glared at me.
"What would you understand! The sea levels are still rising, soon there won't be enough land. There'll be too many people. I'm saving our future!"
"You're saving your own. " A harsh laugh escaped my throat. "I won't tell you again. Let! Them! Go!"
Her bloodshot eyes flickered with a psychotic gleam as she tilted her head in amusement. As if I were some twisted experiment gone wrong.
"It won't matter because none of you will see it"
A thunderous crack made my blood run cold. A strangled scream rang in my head as Cat slumped to the ground, her pale hand outstretched towards me. "You monster!" I screamed baring my teeth. The bullet had sliced through Cat's skull. Wind-swept hair splayed across her face, still frozen in fear and disbelief. I blinked, I saw her glassy eyes, gazing at the smoky sky. I blinked again, I saw her smile, so wide. Joyful and innocent.
He stood with the same distant expression on his face, staring without seeing. He wasn't human, he wasn't Vesta. Ebony had turned him into a killing machine.
An uncontrollable rage ripped me apart. Flames of fury roared within me as I resisted the urge to take my bare fists and pound her into the earth, all the way back to hell. She deserved so, so much worse. Blazing sparks of rage and wrath flickered through my body. My blood boiled as it coursed through my veins. Scorching tears surged down my face.
I stalked towards her. She stared me down, unfazed.
"Put the gun down. If you don't..." a wicked smile stretched across her face, "let's just say your departure won't be as quick or painless as theirs."
To her shock I did exactly as she asked. Her eyes widened in confusion as I placed my gun on the ground in front of her.
Don't think you've overestimated me, I scorned. I'm not letting you go without a fight. My fingers wrapped around the smooth handle of the knife. And I'm going to do it my way.
