It all started on a cool august day with the wind winding through the
trees near our small cottage home that for me looked like somewhere
that Hansel and Gretel lived. It was a peaceful day with my mom and my
brother, Hayden picking peas. IIt was often said that I was my
father’s daughter with my “jet black hair and jewel green eyes” but
that’s just what the busy bodies in town said. They also said my
brother was my mother’s child with his easy displacement and blonde
hair and blue eyes. When we went into other towns for supplies for the
cottage people thought we were joking when we said we were siblings
and they often asked if our parents had adopted one of us. Then again
you had to keep in mind that even our temperaments were polar
opposites, like I said Hayden was laved back but I was a fiery ball of
temper or if it was someone nicer describing me they would say I just
followed my name in life, Passion.
I guess that’s what gets me in to so much trouble.
So on that day that started out so peaceful, we got a messenger, a
man who had rode with my dad on his wolf hunting team. It was well
known that wolf hunting was made illegal by the king and if you were
caught you would be put on trail with an almost 100% chance of getting
a guilty sentence, The only way out was if you had someone who loved
you enough to swap places with you. That barley ever happened.
The man brought us a letter that my mom opened, she seemed to read it
through twice before she handed it to me:
Clare
I am so sorry for what happened, we always knew Shade liked to take
chances but we never thought he would be stupid enough to go after the
legendary black wolf on his own. It was too much for him, we found him
up by Kaldor pass. There is nothing to bring home.
PS. We send our best, we hope you find a way to weather this.
With deepest regret,
Jim
