It was foggy and dark as Joe walked home, just then he heard a scream he ran to the noise, he ran down the foggy street. He came to a clearing. The only thing that imerged was a tall, fat, scraggly tree. At the base of the tree sat Hailey, unconcious, blood blooming from a wound on the side of her head.
Quickly he ran over to her, pulling his phone from his pocket. He went to call 911 and there was no signal. There was a rustle in the woods. Joe gently put Hailey down and ran after it. The air was muggy, and for Joe, it was hard to breath.
He slowly crept through the woods every noise making him jump. He saw another clearing come up, he was relieved and then saw that he was right back where he was before except this time Hailey wasn't there and a tall, pale skinned, no faced, man in a suit was standing in her place.
Joe froze and this time, it wasn't by will. The tall, pale figure made its way to Joe taking slow, deliberate steps in his direction. He was suddenly closer than he was before and in a few steps he would be right in front of him. Close enough to do, god only knows what, and Joe couldn't do anything about it.
He stood, and waited, not breathing, not blinking, as if he could if he tried. One more step and the thing that must have killed Hailey would be right in front on him. A shot rang out. The man dissapeared into thin air. Whatever was making Joe stay still stopped and he slumped to the ground, and gasped for air, his lungs were burning from the lack of oxygen.
Suddenly he was aware he wasn't alone. He looked up and saw Hailey. Blood still caked on the side of her forehead, holding a gun.
"I thought you were dead." Were the words that came out of his mouth. She smiled. "I am." With that, she pulled the trigger and the world went black.
******
He woke up still in the clearing with Hailey sitting up against the tree, a few feet away from where he was lying down.
"Finally. You're awake. I thought you'd never come to." She said, as if it was the most common thing in the world.
"What are you talking about?!" Joe yelled, suddenly angry.
"You're dead like me."
"You shot me." He murmured in disbelief.
"You shot me!"
She was picking at her nails. Clearly to her the conversation wasn't interesting.
"I figured since we're besties....." She trailed off.
"We can even spend death together." She smiled. Joe fully sat up.
"You are out of you're mind. You killed me, so we could spend death together as best friends."
"Yes." She said, robotically standing up, and slowly started to walk forward. "Now we can spend forever and ever together...... Bestie."
