My mother already set the table. There were 6 plate-settings, which I later found out was for my brothers new girlfriend and all I could think was thank goodness Luke is here.

"How long has Danny been seeing this girl?" I asked my mom as she continued mashing the potatoes.

"Not too long, I think two months?" she said while pouring milk into the mash.

I passed her the butter and asked her, "have you met her yet?"

"Yes. You know her as well, actually" she smiled. She stopped what she was doing to look at me. "I know you haven't talked to your brother in a long time, but I would appreciate a nice afternoon."

I knew her? And my mom was worried about a fight between me and my brother? "Okay."

She hugged me quick, and added, "Lunch is almost ready, why don't you get your dad and Luke? Your brother will be home any minute."

I walked down the hall and found my dad and Luke watching TV in the living room. "Hey, mom said lunch is almost ready."

They both turned their heads and my dad stood up. "Better go see if she needs any more help." My dad and I never really had much of a relationship, so when he walked by me with a quick glance, it was nothing out of the ordinary.

I waited until my dad was completely out of the room to talk to Luke. "Pray for me."

He furrowed his brows in confusion, "what's wrong?"

"Danny has a girlfriend who is coming today and I know her and my mom gave me this vibe." I rolled my eyes.

"What vibe?" Luke questioned, holding my eyes with his.

I licked my lips and shrugged my shoulders before answering, "I don't know, like something bad might happen."

And before we could continue, the front door opened and it was time for lunch. Luke and I walked into the kitchen to help bring plates of food to the table. When I walked into the dining room, I saw my brother pulling a chair out for his girlfriend to sit in. My brother, Danny, walked in with a girl with familiar long dark brown hair. I instantly recognized her — she didn't change much. My brother was dating Lindsay Chambers, who happens to be my ex-best friend.

She smiled when she saw me—one of those big fake smiles. To be nice, I smiled back.

"Hey, Luke. Didn't know you'd be here." Lindsay smirked.

Luked rolled his eyes. "Always a pleasure, Lindsay."

Danny whispered something in Lindsay's here which made her cover her mouth and giggle. We haven't even started lunch yet, and I already want a drink. Luke and I sat down, my parents joining us all at the table.

"Dig in!" My mother encouraged.

"So, Lindsay, you in school or working?" My father asks, before chewing on a piece of steak.

Lindsay smiled and wiped her mouth. "Actually both! I'm in school part time and working two jobs. It was a compromise."

"How so?" my mother asked.

"Well, I wasn't sure what I wanted to study, but I got accepted into College and my parents don't believe in defering a year. So I got a job at a restaurant and I'm also a part-time model."

My mother and father both praised Lindsay the rest of the lunch. I could feel Luke's eyes on me every now and then and I knew what he was thinking. I bit my lip and tried to get through the rest of this lunch. So far I'm getting through it. I may not be joining in on the Lindsay-love fest, but I'm here. That's all that matters, right?
