Who cares?!

The party is loud outside on the back lawn, my closest friends are here and family. As well as family friends. Lights are strung up and there's a bonfire in the middle.

*Knock knock

"You coming down princess?" My dad says smiling. He pauses for a minute "I have marshmallows!" He says holding them up looking all smiley.

I don't smile back, at least on the outside.

He sighs and takes a seat next to me. "Pumpkin I know it's tough but you'll get her." He says reassuringly.

"And if I don't?! Dad, I'm 15 years old today and I still can't transform. She's in my head, talking to me, wanting to come out but she won't! She won't even tell me why! It's killing me! She won't ever come out!" Tear drops flood my cheeks.

It's so embarrassing being the girl without her wolf form. I'm a latent wolf. The worst kind you could ever be.

'You aren't a latent wolf you stupid girl'

My wolf was stung by my thoughts, she left. It's just me and my dad now.

He doesn't know what to say. He knows I'm a latent he just won't admit it to my face. I've heard them talking about it- my mother and father. Late at night every birthday when they think I'm asleep.

I don't sleep the night of my birthday. I never do.

He sighed again.
"Well I'm not going to let you mope around up here, let's go you have guests and you're being very rude." My father said in a tone that left no room for argument.

"Okay." I agree unwillingly.

"I have marshmallows!" My dad yelled as he went outside. Everyone crowding him.

I sit down in the gazebo in out back yard and Marie joins me. A tan/golden wolf.

"No moping this year, I don't care that you're another year older and don't have your wolf. Tonight we're gonna party!" She says happily.

I smile genuinely at her. "Yeah, who cares?!" I yell and she sneaks off somewhere.

A few seconds later she comes back with two shots and I stare at her in shock. "We're only 15! Where did you get those?!" I whisper yell as I hold the tiny glass in my hand.

"You said who cares" she reminded me. She was right. Who cares? I know I don't. With that, I down the glass of burning liquid.

I choke it back and so does she before we fall on the ground laughing.
"You're face looks so funny" she told me while mimicking my shot face.

We sit just the two of us all night except for the occasional visitor wishing me happy birthday.

Far off I can see my parents talking to the elders of the pack. They catch me staring and immediately turn away.

Marie sees what I see and side hugs me before walking away only to return with two more shots.

"Who cares!" She raises her glass and we clink them together before downing the burning liquid that by now is getting to me.

I feel better, less tense. I'm not sad anymore just very very happy. Unnaturally happy actually. I love it.
