"I said come here!" Mells father yelled.
"N-No!" Mell said weakly trying to catch her breath from running up the stairs.
"When I catch you, you are going to have bruises for weeks." Her father chuckled at the thought of her having bruises and scars all over his daughter.
Mell quickly texted her best friend. "Lexi help me he's doing it again just like every day just please help me..." Read Mells text. The three dots appeared and Mell felt a little relief. "I'm on my way you know what to do" Lexi replied. "Right." Read Mells next text.
"Melanie! Get your ass down here right now!" Her father yelled getting frustrated. He started to walk up the stairs.
As Mell heard her sorry excuse for a fathers foot steps coming up the stairs she grabbed the bag she had packed later that day and jumped out the second floor window. She landed easier than expected.
"Lexi I can't do this anymore..." Mell said in a raspy voice. Her throat is shot from yelling and screaming for weeks trying to get away from her father.
"I know that's why your staying at my house from now on." Lexi said proudly. Mells eyes widened.
"R-really?!" Mell asked excitedly. Her dog Cobalt jumped off of the window sill. The dark gray husky sat by Mells side watching Lexi cautiously.
"Easy boy you know who that is she won't hurt me..." Mell reassured her dog. His bright blue eyes looked up at her. He had blood on his mouth no wonder Lexi stood there in shock. "You attacked dad again didn't you..." Cobalt looks down like he's in trouble. "That's amazing." Mell kneels down and hugged him.
"Let's go mom loves dogs I bet she won't mind having a dog like him around..." Lexi said. Mell looked down at Cobalt with hopeful eyes.
"Don't forget I'm just sitting in my driveway right now..." Mell said realizing where she was.
"Oh right heh... Let's go before your psycho dad gets out here..." Lexi said lightly grabbing her arm knowing what Mell hides under her long sleeves.
"Hey mom." Lexi greeted her mother as she entered her house. Her mother smiled warmly at her daughter.
"Hey Ms.Eriksen..." Mell greeted Lexi's mother as she put her bag down on the kitchen counter.
"Come here Melanie let me see what he's done to you this time..." Lexi's mother walked over to Mell lifting up her sleeve. "You cut more... Mell why? Doesn't your father hurt you enough?"
"Ms.Eriksen I'm sorry I couldn't hold back... It's hard to explain okay?" Mell said tugging her arm away. "I'm sorry..." Mell pulled her sleeve back down her arm wincing as the cuff of the sleeve slid down the newer cuts.
"Your legs are pretty beat up... Let me see your face take off your hood." Lexi's mother commanded. Mell took off her hood. On Mells face were multiple wounds including a black eye and a swollen lip. "Okay I've seen enough. Are you hungry?" Lexi's mother asked.
"I'm fine thanks for the offer though. Oh and this is Cobalt... I couldn't leave without him... He can be a big help around the house I promise he's very protective and smart." Mell introduced her dog.
"I don't mind the dog." Lexi's mother says.
"Mell why aren't you eating..." Lexi said as she closed her room door.
Mell grabbed her iPod and head phones. "One less thing to worry about being made fun of at school." Mell said like it was the simplest thing in the world.
"You say that like its so simple..." Lexi said flopping down on her bed.
"Is it not? It seems so simple... Not wanting to get messed with for being a bit over weight at school can be taken off the list of things I get made fun of for." Mell rolled her eyes. She flipped through the songs that she had and settled on one. "Can't we just drop this topic and never pick it up again? I'm tired."
"Fine. But you're eating breakfast in the morning. At least eat one of the muffins mom made tonight." Lexi glanced over to Mell.
"Your mom made muffins?!" Mell asked excitedly. "Oh my Irene her muffins are amazing! Yes I'll eat one muffin... But conversation dropped there. I'm going to sleep. Night Lex." Mell said putting her headphones in.
"Night Mell." Lexi replied laying down on her bed.
