Pretences

Everyone thinks they know her,

When all they've seen is her smile,

They never thought what lay beneath,

Could be so sad and so vile.

They never thought to ask,

Why she became so quiet,

Why she no longer laughed,

Why she no longer caused any riots,

No one thought,

That when she said she was feeling depressed,

She wasn't joking.

She was purely being honest.

She tried to tell someone,

But they just ignored her.

So she gave up trying.

Because, why bother?

So she kept her mouth shut,

Not daring to speak.

Afraid that she would spill,

Afraid that she would leak.

They never knew of her tears,

Never knew why she became so distant.

They never bothered to ask,

Why she eventually became so silent.

She cried when she was alone.

And laughed in front of everyone.

She pretended all was well.

Whilst silently cocking the gun.

The gun shot awoke them.

Midway through the night.

They never knew the reason.

She finally took flight.
