"All right Nico, we're here," my father said with excitement in his voice. I let out a shaky smile. Of all people, I should be the one that is the most happy, it was because of me everyone was moving to the country. I just couldn't bear to live in the city where my mother and my sister had their accident. I just couldn't; for me, Philadelphia was a city filled with death. "Nico. Nico!" My father snapped his fingers in front of my face. I jolted out of memory lane. "You ok?"
I forced myself to smile. "Why wouldn't I be? I'm as happy as hell!" I gave my dad a short grin to reassure him that I am excited and really wanted this. Of course I was excited! Goodbye Philadelphia, hello Ohio! I snorted. "Dad, did you know that Ohio means hello in Japanese?"
He faked a headache. "What did I do to deserve death by cringe?" My laugh tasted bitter in my mouth.
"You don't choose the cringe, it chooses you." I winked. What the heck was I doing? Today was a strange day. My dad and I rarely talk like this. Make that never. But it was nice for a change, before he gets busy with his job as a Coroner and Doctor. Best enjoy it while I can. The thought nearly made me cry. In my new house, without my mother and sister, and my dad working all day, I'll be all alone. It hit me hard. My mom and Bianca were really gone. I don't know what happened when it really hit me. All I know is that I fell to my knees and sobbed my heart out. My dad came and embraced me, trying to comfort me. I cried into his shoulder. He didn't have to say anything, his comfort was enough. We were just two people who have lost two people that we had loved.
"It's not too late to back out," he whispered in my ear. "If you don't want this, we can always move back to Philadelphia." I stood up, and shook my head violently.
Gritting my teeth, I said. "I'm never going back to that place." I stared right into my dad's eyes. "Ever."
He looked shocked to see my reaction, but he nodded. "Let's take a look around then, shall we?" It turns out things in the countryside are much, much cheaper than the houses in the city. Or the owner was just that desperate to get rid of it. Of course, it was cheap so dad just had to get it. If we end up selling it to get another house, I will definitely resist saying I told you so.
Everything seemed fine, regardless of the price. The bushes were carved into swirls. Yes, I'm paying way too much attention to the yard. Do I care? Starts with a N, ends with an O. But there's space for my dog. That's good.
"The beds are already in, right?" I asked. Dad nodded. I ran upstairs and into my room. The drive was tiring, and even if there weren't any covers on the dirty mattress, I was way too exhausted to care. I flopped onto it. No one was watching, or there to reprimand me, so it was ok. Or so I thought.
"That mattress has been used for a while, according to my observations, and it has no cover. Is that even FDA approved?" I was startled and looked around. Where the heck had that voice come from?
The bed creaked as I got up. A cold air began to surround me. I felt my nose get tweaked, highly irritating me. Seeing that I swat at just air also annoyed me greatly. In front of my disbelieving eyes, the air assumed the color black, and slowly faded into the figure of a human. First the black changed to a tuft of blonde hair, then faded more to reveal striking blue eyes. Next came tan skin, and I could see a splash of freckles on the bridge of his nose and cheeks. There was a giant red stain on his blue t-shirt, which I hoped wasn't blood. I also noticed he was wearing modern blue jeans.
I backed away as far as I could.
"Wha- who-" I spluttered. No, it wasn't because this piece of air was the definition of sexy. Would anyone not be speechless if a supernatural being entered his/her/their room?Ghost boy scoffed. "You mean my room. And hey! My name is Will! Not ghost boy!" He bowed. "William Solace at your service! Not literally, of course," he stammered.
What was I supposed to do? I glared at him. "Whatever, Will." I opened the window. "Out. Now."
He sent me a glare with equal intensity. I felt a gust of air lift me to the top of the room, an invisible hand around my throat. Will himself came up to my height. "Don't mess with me," he whispered in my ear. "You will regret it." I struggled in his grip. "Will, put me down. Stop touching me!" I yelled. I felt myself get released and fell on my dusty mattress with an oomph.
"Have a nice rest," Will grinned mischievously, making his blue eyes sparkle, I noticed with dismay. "Nico," He dissappeared with a pop of air.
All I could think was: this was gonna be great.
